What is the best means for quantitative measurement of cytolysis?

I need to quantitatively measure cell lysis of bacteria that are already dead.

This is not my field, but I imagine you can either perform counts of cells (per given area) or mean/sd of the cells (within of a given area). It doesn't seem to be more complicated than that, unless I am missing something?
