I want to use some herbs to treat freshly isolated smooth muscle cells and would like to hear from experts about the best extraction method in this case.
Various extraction methods are available for various phytochemical groups. If you aren't looking for any specific one, a general crude extraction method could be as follows:
Crush sample, dry or still fresh, immerse in methanol for about 7 hours with continuous stirring. Then filter off the residues. The remaining solution will contain a very wide range of phytochemicals which you can either use as is, or concentrate by drying (best to use rotor vaporator or lymphorizer).
If you are interersted in specific classes of compounds, then you can take it from this stage and dissolve in various solvents
I agree with Dr. Priyankar.... The best extraction method depends on your target Phytochemical group and research objectives. This would lead you to your choice of solvent as extractability of solvents differ.
It depends the nature of plant like Garlic, active ingredients can be extracted by use of ethanol as tincture while some can be extracted boiling in water like bottle brush
