I am reasonably new to this area of reasearch. I have searched literature and found different chemical methods for synthesis of graphene oxide from graphite. The most common method was Hummers modified and improved method. I decided to use modified hummers method but different literature mentioned different experimental conditions (particulary the temperature used in the synthesis) though the chemicals employed remained same for most procedures.
Can somone provide an optimal procedure with reliable literature for the synthesis of graphene oxide from graphite using modified Hummers method?
suggest to follow few things in preparing high quality Graphene oxide.
Prepare GO using the regular procedure...( modified Hummer's method)
In the final step, add more H2O2: purchase H2O2 from medical shop and use fresh solutions...
We will get GO powder settled in bottom.. first wash it with HCl; thats fine..
Till that no chance..
Next step is to filter the GO, then take in a big beaker capacity of 500 mL, put some 300 mL water and sonicate for more than 2 hrs...
Then start to centrifuge the solution..
U have to centrifuge some 20 ml then discard the supernatent.. then again 20 ml and discard the supernatent... then finally will get GO powder,,, in the centrifuge tube.. now u have to add distilled water and sonicate or just mix the powder and DI water with some pillers... then again cetrifuge... continue this process till to get the pH of supernatent as 7... as the pH closes to 7, Some GO will dissolve in supernatent.. thats the time to save the water... if the GO come in the supernatent, dont throght that... then save that GO solution in another beaker... then add water in centrifuge tube.. sonicate for 15 min... then again centrifuge and collect the supernatent.. continue this process for more than 15 times.. now u will get GO solution... if u still GO powder in centrifuge tube, just discard it.. now its time to dry the GO solution...
take some petri dishes and spread the GO solution and keep it in air atmosphere.. make sure no dust in that area... then allow it to dry... after drying, scratch the GO, and use it for electrochemical studies...
This will give better exfoliation and give very good results...

i advise you to be be very cautious when you use Hummers method. Regarding any conditions try to control temperature with great caution and below 55°C when you add phosphoric acid and H2O2. If you see some purple fumes coming out a lot, stop heating and get out of the lab because this is explosive gas. Never synthesize a large volume at once.
