There are many entomopathogenic fungi available like Metarhizium, Beauveria , Verticillium which are used for control of several insects. It is apparent that these fungi do not establish well in the crop ecosystem, thus giving low level control of insects. Is there any way to keep these fungi thrive in the crop ecosystem. And what are the factors that affect the survival of these fungi in crop ecosystem. Sustained multiplication of these pathogens in crop ecosystem till the end of crop life cycle is very crucial. How do we ensure this?
Dear Dr Giridhar Kalidasu, to keep the prevalence of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) in the field, maintaining soil health is crucial. Some studies have revealed that organic matter rich soils could enhance the diversity and biomass of EPF. Other physicochemical characteristics of soil are also important, particularly the soil texture. Sandy and loamy soils could facilitate the movement of EPF inoculums, while higher clay fractions may impede the movement. Also, minimizing synthetic agrochemicals input is necessary.
