I want to screen fenugreek germplasm for early seedling growth, particularly biomass. If biomass of seedling, during early stages like 7-21 days, is associated with seed weight or size, then I can avoid evaluating certain lines based on test weight or size of seed. Or these traits unrelated. Pulse crops may be useful reference.
There is plenty of recent literature on the subject, but among the classic articles I would recommend this one: GRIME, J. P. & JEFFREY, D . W. (1965). Seedling establishment in vertical gradients of sunglight. Journal of Ecology, 53, 621-642.
I think there is some relation,but maybe it does not always mean a correlation. The weight and size of the seed may mean a more efficient shoot. But I then would not count complexity or evolution. I suppose biomass means the seedling, including the first leaf and the shoot. Maybe it may mean root. Complex, the shoot with a fruit, maybe the tall shoot or maybe a small shoot or plant (how much does the plant need to grow?)
I have gone through some research papers, particularly on pulses. I have found that, as general rule, seed size or test weight are highly correlated with early seedling biomass. However, the effects disappear or persist later stages of phenology depending on several factors including genetics, environment and management. It is possible to select genotypes with high early seedling biomass by looking at seed size or test weight. It is very important to keep in mind that this effect is up to certain stage of crop phenology. In case of leafy vegetables which are sold as seedlings such as Fenugreek, this approach is very interesting for selection of genotypes.

Large seeds increased the plant height, the leaf area index and the shoot and root biomass since the first sampling but did not affect pod biomass. At the beginning of the experiment the large seeds increased the crop growth rate, but this effect disappeared at the end of sampling period.

The size of a seed is known to affect the fitness of the plant growing from it; larger seeds often have the higher fitnesses. Initial seed size affects time of germination, seedling growth rate and the number of seeds produced.
