As one of the authors of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, I am biased.
But other scales include:
1-Andreasen's SANS and SAPS
2-BPRS
I am also writing to underscore that the acronym is the PANSS (not the PANNS) and share a memory: we briefly thought of naming it the Negative and Positive Syndrome Scale or NAPSS....but late one afternoon as I found myself beginning to fall asleep it occurred to my that the NAPSS would be a good name for a sleeping pill but not for a scale measuring presence and severity of symptoms found in persons with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
For reasons of brevity, you could use just the 8 items proposed by Andreasen et al (2005) to assess remission... It all depends on the objective of the assessment.
Andreasen et al (2005) endorses using 8 items from either the PANSS or the SANS-SAPS or the BPRS
The items measure 3 dimensions of psychopathology: positive symptoms; negative symptoms; and disorganization symptoms
That paper does not endorse one scale over any other.

For the assessment of negative symptoms you could use one of the most recent instruments: the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) or the Brief Negative Symptoms Scale (BNSS), both based on the NIHM-MATRICS consensus and comprising a two factor structure: diminished emotional expression and motivation/pleasure.
For the assessment of Positive Symptoms the BPRS can be a good alternative to the PANSS.
As a coauthor of the PANSS, I would like to know the context from which this question arose: most people find the PANSS reliable/valid and user friendly.
I assume if you are seeking an alternative there's something you do not like about the PANSS: what? (I appreciate and need constructive criticism so do NOT worry about my feeling!)
We were planning a validation study in Portugal because we are using Spanish versions. But I could not understand if the PANNS is a scale or a clinical interview.

The POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SYNDROME SCALE or PANSS (not PANNS) is a 30-item 7-point symptom severity scale sensitive to change and therefore used to assess response to treatment.
THE STRUCTURED CLINICAL INTERVIEW FOR THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SYNDROME SCALE or SCI-PANSS is an interview developed to assure that information is gathered in a consistent manner across sites.
Both the PANSS and the SCI-PANSS have been translated into Portuguese, both Portugal Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese: these translations are available from the publisher and copyright holder, MultiHealth Systems Inc. whose headquarters is in Toronto, Ontario, CANADA.
