I used ANSYS Workbench in the modal analysis of a structural frame. The structure is imported as solid body NOT surface model. I meshed it using mapped mesh option and hexa\tetra elements. Somewhere I read that the used element for such case is SOL187 however I have some doubts on this point.
The objective of the question is to know whether the ANSYS workbench is AUTOMATICALLY treating the solid body with the suitable elements or not.
Another point, I have some doubts about the answer of this question " When shall we use surface model instead of solid one"?
Per my understanding, We should use solid model if we want higher accuracy in solutions and we use surface models when we want quick and to some extent reliable accuracy.

Generally there is no hard and fast rule for element selection .As per your requirement you have to choose ur element. Before choosing ur element you should study about the features of the element from help menu.
That is what I do in ANSYS APDL , however in ANSYS workbench, I do not know on what basis meshing occurs ? why hexa\tetra options without definition of the element type.

The recent trend in ansys is to use 180 series elements (possibly we can say easy of convergence).
while meshing in WB u can find the option of meshing With or W/o mid nodes (To choose higher / first order element).This you can change in settings and there is no auto element selection.
There is shape function of each element in element technology which helps to select the appropriate element type.
Selecting solid or shell elements is based on the geometry and its functions.
sometimes to tackle the long debugging time u can opt for shell.
