Carbon sequestration is capturing the carbon dioxide produced from various sources like burning fossil fuels and storing it safely away from the atmosphere. It is the long-term storage of carbon dioxide or other forms of carbon in oceans, soils, vegetation to mitigate the global warming and climate change.

Carbon sequestration means capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) which is found in the atmosphere or which is produced by human activity in industrial plants or power stations (in this case, the capture is made before it is released to the atmosphere and it is usually sent into long-term storage). Carbon absorption is the process of taking carbon dioxide out of the environment (e.g. by trees or plants in photosynthesis). In the past, naturally produced CO2 was removed by satisfactory natural processes but now the level of CO2 is beyond the capacity of nature to absorb fully.
