Septicemia is an infection of the blood, also known as bacteremia or blood poisoning. Infection by microbes is the prime reason behind this. But is there any other reason (physiological or behavioral) associated with the prime cause?

The bacteria that cause septicemia in calves, many of which are characterized as gram-negative bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, are difficult and expensive to treat, and survival rate is low. Early signs of septicemia may be subtle but affected calves are usually depressed, weak, reluctant to stand, and suckle poorly within 5 days of birth. Swollen joints, diarrhea, pneumonia, meningitis, cloudy eyes and/or a large, tender navel may develop. Fever is not a consistent finding in septicemic calves; many have normal or subnormal temperatures. Most septicemic calves have a history of inadequate colostrum intake.

I think the question was why septicemia occurs? It is an infection that for some reason or other, the body cannot fight off with its own defenses.

This, from the CDC, equates septicemia with sepsis. But it does list some physiological factors. Not surprisingly, it can more easily occur to anyone with a compromised or otherwise not optimal immune system, including the very young and the elderly.

Hello Shankhadeep and all, one of my neighbors was admitted into hospital for septicemia. Even sitting was painful. She has bad psoriasis and someone was doing some acupuncture to help her. We believed that the bacteria got in through the acupuncture process. It was Staphylococcus aureus. It took a fortnight for her to recover well enough to be discharged. (As for me, I am very busy, little time for QA, just working on my research and collaborations)
