Another possibility is using this formula: r = Z/√N. Rosenthal, (1994), proposed this alternative when you weren't able to use the Cohen's because you violated the general assumptions of Cohen's formula. 

There are many ways to this calculation, but the most common formula is the one that I stated above. You can also check this formula in Discovering statistics using SPSS by Andy Field.

A robust effect size for non-normal distributions is Cliff's Delta. It assumes nothing and evaluates the magnitude of overlapping between two vector of observations. Cliff's Delta is a real number than moves between -1 a +1. However, the + or - depends only on which vector you entered first into the calculations. Hence, you can simply consider the absolute value of Cliff's Delta. A less raw interpretation, but still raw in my opinion is to use conventional descriptors like Cohen's d (small, medium, large), which are explicitly conventional according to Cohen. For Cliff's Delta absolute value you have a small effect size  around .147, a medium effect size around .33, and a large effect size around .474. This conventional taxonomy might provide a still raw orientation, but helps to understand results. It is still raw because it was calculated for Delta using simulations for two normal vectors and taking the Delta's values mirrored in Cohen's d. The general intepretation tip is that Delta=cero means a complete overlap between the two vectors (i.e. associated to no statistical significance for the difference between two vectors), that is, both sets of results are random samples from the same population. By the contrary, when Delta goest the opposite way, that is, towards the absolute value of 1 (+1 or -1 if you do not consider the absolute value), then the effect size is gradually larger (a reliable statistical difference between vectors according to p-value). You can find attached some more information including a Calculator we wrote (follow the link, download from mediafire and read de readmefirst for easy instructions). The ViSta modue S-calc also calculates the Cliff's Delta. Thank you all for your kind suggestions! At this point I am comparing related data, I mean the same individuals at one time point vs. another, using Wilcoxon. I guess the same effect size calculations cannot be used for this as for Mann Whitney. True? Or am I wrong and I can actually use the number of observations in the same manner?

Since you are testing related data you will be using the Wilcoxon's matched pair test. You can use the calculator to calculate effect size. Used the signed rank test.

I want to ask Juan carlos. I went through the book you mention but i cannot seem to find the cutoff ranges for large moderate and low effect size. Do you have any papers on that or is anyone here aware of any

There are several problems with answers in this thread.

1) @GuillermoMacbeth, as far as I know Cliff’s delta is for independent samples, and so isn’t appropriate for this question about paired samples. Unless there is a variant for paired samples.

2) I don’t have the Rosenthal book, but from the description given by @JuanCarlosSaravia, it sounds like it is talking about an effect size for independent samples. In any case, it is not clear from this description if N refers to the total observation in both groups or the number of paired observations.

3) The calculator linked to by @JeganathanSarangapany may be valuable, but I don’t see where it describes how it is calculating the statistic, so it’s not something I would trust.

4) The website linked to by @GloriamGuenzburger seems to me to have a method that works reasonably well, though I haven’t found any good references for how to handle effect size calculations for one-sample Wilcoxon test or paired rank-sum test. One concern I have is the "small"-"medium"-"large" interpretations listed there. I suspect that they were adopted from Cohen's (1988) interpretations of the r from correlation analysis, without consideration that the two r statistics are different. For the paired case (signed rank test), I didn't find these interpretations to seem on par with other Cohen-based interpretations.

Aminu A. Ibrahim , for the unrelated Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, there are several options: Cliff's delta, Vargha and Delaney's A, and the "r" that is z/sqrt(N). N is the total number of observations.

For the paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test, there is also an "r" which similarly is z/sqrt(N), although there is some discussion if this N should be the number of pairs, or 2 x the number of pairs. I think it should be the number of pairs.

Thanks @ Salvatore ... but just for confirm or clarify :

1) If I understand well, basically "r" apply the same formula for Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank: z/srqr(N).

So, for example if we compare two groups (Boys = 60 and Girls = 40) N will be 100 in "r" Mann-Whitney formula. And if we compare the same group two times (N = 50), N will be 50 in "r" Wilcoxon formula (not 2x50). Correct?

2) Can I interpret both "r" as usual?: i.e.: 0.1-0.3 = small effect; 0.3-0.5 = medium, and >.05 large

3) Which citation should be referenced to justify the use of these formulas?
