The symptom of free will is self-determination. Non-living bodies obey mechanical laws of nature and act according to external forces. But the living organisms utilize physical laws in carrying out their biological functions; therefore physical laws are not sufficient to describe them. For e.g., a bird’s flight path cannot be calculated from Newton's laws of motion. Plants grow above the ground against the force of gravity, i.e. they exhibit negative gravitropism. The movements of organism show self-determinism. Mangroves intentionally generate breathing roots against gravity.

"Self determination-Being one's own". It is the power or ability to make a decision for oneself without influence from outside and to act or decide without seeking advice from others.
In educational studies on motivation, self-determination is one of the intrinsic components. It's all about preparing well for labs and tests, putting in effort and time into learning, working hard to understand, remember and able to apply the knowledge/ science, and using strategies when needed. (The part that deals with confidence is self-efficacy. Many people get confused.)

Self Determination in broader sense:
1. Determination of one's own fate or course of action without compulsion; free will.
2. Freedom of the people of a given area to determine their own political status; independence.

In my view, two things are involved here: the one is self, the other is determination. The self here already foregrounds freewill: in other words, it is in self to determine (the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose) using its freewill. Therefore, self-determination is the conscious choice by self to decide self's destiny, that is, to determine how, what and when self wants it!
Self determination has nothing to do with scratching of all bonds or fellowships. It is about one's own will (good or bad) to do or to meet a goal or to achieve success in an endevour. Even animals will have a kind of self determination when they search or forage for food.

Self-determination does not imply leaving behind all bonds. It does imply carefully selecting and occasionally revising them. Sometimes, new groups must be developed for new purposes, if those already existing do not suffice for the purposes or need at hand.
Self-determination may require leaving behind bonds which create great limitations. The slave must leave behind the slaveholder, to become something more; and equally, the peasant on the land must sometimes leave behind the landowner or Lord in the manor in order to become something more. Loyalties may become dead weights, or they may serve to liberate. In consequence, there is no general rule regarding older or established bonds. We must ask about who are one's true friends and who are the friends of one's objectives?

elf-determination is not the ideal ability to take something by force of another. While the flight paths of an isolated bird are not calculable from laws such as Newton, it is possible to calculate the behavior of a flock, each bird following the movement of a few close to him. Many biological desarrolllos are possible taking entropy of the environment and generating a temporally stable order. If that's self-determination or not it is hard to say. Can the plant comply with the law of gravity and avoid growing? It is a complex issue. That good we can discuss it, but hardly solve.
Self-determination is an approach to human personality and intrinsic motivation.

Self determination is the will of one's own acts or states without external compulsion. People are often moved by external factors such as reward systems, grades, evaluations, or the opinions they fear others might have of them. Yet just as frequently, people are motivated from within, by interests, curiosity, care or abiding values. These intrinsic motivations are not necessarily externally rewarded or supported, but nonetheless they can sustain passions, creativity, and sustained efforts. This intrinsic motives and needs inherent in human nature is self-determination. Everyone at some time in their life is determined to do something in life that they want to accomplish from birth to death.
