Science is a theoretical research activity or discipline, whereas technology consists of material artifacts or activities directly related to the production of artifacts. You could also say that technology is a product of applied science (e.g. engineering) and some of those products are sometimes used to do more science (e.g. as a telescope is a piece of technology that was produced via applications of optics and metallurgy and was used to do astronomy). If you consider tools per se to be a form of technology, then not all technology derives from science, since early hominins weren't doing science.

I see the correct application of Tekne--the Greek for technology being applied in your answer above. In the medieval Trivium and Quadrivium one included the sciences and one the arts, correct? I think science still is not quite up to poetry anf philosophy at Oxford Univ. Cambridge is more science friendly, I believe.

But in its own sphere, Science is the Queen of thought and technology is the handmaid. The engineers will love this configuration.

Well, maybe.* But there are plenty of tool-using species besides those guys. Chimps not only use found objects as tools (e.g. so-called "percussive technology": using rocks to crack nuts, ) but modify objects to create tools (stripping a twig in a particular way for more efficient termite fishing). Some birds also use thorns or modify short twigs to extract insects. Disney and Dolittle notwithstanding, I don't think there are (or ever were) any nonhumanoid scientists on this planet.

Science is an intellectual activity carried on by humans that is designed to discover information about the natural world in which humans live and to discover the ways in which this information can be organized into meaningful patterns. Is this not a definition for SOCIAL science as distinct from Natural or Physical science? These include physics, astronomy, chemistry and so on.

Of course, these two branches of science can overlap as when opioid drugs (chemistry) are abused (sociology and psychology.)

Science is a branch of knowledge or study, which deals with a set of facts and facts systematically. It is the system of knowledge related to the physical world or its phenomena. Science is based on observation and unbiased observation of an idea. Science relies on methodological experiments that help to build facts General or basic laws.

You see from these replies how people's thinking goes in differing direction when they encounter the term "Science." What may seem obvious will be shown not so as more comments come in. The fields of social vs. natural sciences are divided by methods and targets of observation.

Also theoretical science with simulations and math models from direct observational science. Some comments are getting to this.

Science can also be defined as a particular approach to the study of the nature of material things based on the measurement, observation and various experiences, and then to come up with general laws describing the nature of the things studied. The science also involves the study of human behavior in addition to material matters. Human behavior is taught in sociology. Examples of branches of human sciences are: natural science, physics, chemistry, ecology, oceanography, geosciences, meteorology, biology, etc

In my field of rhetoric we often look into both the connotative and denotative meanings of a term in question. For instance, the dictionary denotative definition of science is given literally in words, but people bring to this term a lifetime of valuings and emotions.

These latter definitions will be more connotative meanings.

EX:

How do you feel about science?

Do you believe the findings of science using controlled experiments? Why or why not?

Is science one unitary method in your experience or an umbrella term?

Would you like a family member to go into a field of scientific endeavor? Why or why not?

These affective connotations of science help or hurt its efficacy in any given locale and time, do they not?
