The Dirt Lit Project will use a large corpus of Anglophone fiction from the 19th through the 21st C. I hope some people will be willing to be collaborators at any level or advisors to this project. I welcome your comments.
This project will test a theory that culture is based upon distance form "dirt," "dirty jobs," and "dirty places."
The Great Gatsby example: Jay Gatsby's huge secret is that his father, German immigrant Henry C. Gatz still lives in "The Valley of Ashes" between "Old Money" West Egg and "New Money" East Egg. (I may have those backwards.)
Hiding that dirty secret is the plot thread of this F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel.
In a content analysis, we can assess the role of the dirt cluster of keywords in various novels.
Crossing most ideological and religious divisions, there is really no society in which the upper caste or class lives closer to dirt than the lower.
This holds implications as well for ecological justice and class divides in the environmental movements.
