What is satisfaction? I would like to hear your opinions from various perspectives. It has many perspectives: logical, mathematical, philosophical, musical, pictorial, poetic, spiritual, physical, and many others.
I think that music has a logic. Suppose that someone expects something logical for its music. If the logical expectation for music is satisfied, the person will get a satisfaction. I am a logician and in a sense, a musician. So from a logical point of view, I told about satisfaction very simply.
Satisfaction is an emotion that is felt after a positive event. Satisfaction differs from happiness, which can occur spontaneously, or love, which requires an object. A finished project or test, a fulfilled vow, a successful season or career are examples of such positive events that engender satisfaction. Satisfaction has reward for effort as a component, although the effort can be quite small, like cheering for a team that becomes a World Cup victor. There may also be components of fulfilled expectation, surprise, schadenfreude, and other emotions mingled with satisfaction.
@George McIlvaine Thank you very much for your answer. I find it nice that satisfaction differs from happiness. However, if you think tiny satisfaction as a small happiness, then you feel happier, probably.
@Ghadah Marie Thank you very much for your answer and pointing out the relativeness of my question. Yes, it is relative. So you may specify it by yourself. I expect discussion with broadness of the notion of satisfaction. I do not expect the exact one answer and its exact definition. I expect deversity for the notion of satisfaction. But I think that satisfaction has some of form, if you analyse it.
Takao Inoue, returning to your example of satisfaction regarding music… Interestingly, if music is not well-performed, then the dissatisfaction and resulting unhappiness are greater than the satisfaction and happiness derived from a good musical performance. In other words, bad music can make one unhappier than good music can make one happy. The root cause of this response is unfulfilled satisfaction.
In Greeks' philosophy, man can be composed of body, mentalitiy, and spirit. For body, we need good food. For mentalitiy, we can emotinal, reasonal satisfaction such as knowledge and affection. For spirit, we can God to satisfy our inner man. Just for your reference.
@Paul Kuei-chi Tseng Thank you very much for your answer. I thank you for the diversity of satisfactions. I was moved by your sentence: For spirit, we can God to satisfy our inner man. This was noticed even by certain clergyman and me.
From a psychological perspective, satisfaction is an emotional reaction triggered by the experience of inconsistency between something expected or desired and the observed reality or experience.
@Fernando Toro Álvarez Thank you very much for your answer. Being inspired by your answer, for example, I shall try to formalize the satisfaction as follows.
Object-A: something expected or desired
Object-B: the observed reality or experience
evaluation function or predicate or modality: func_eval(), pred_eval(),
Box_eval (The use of fuzzy concept or other concept are possible.)
[A] In the case of function evaluation.
(triggered) action: * (a kind of mathematical action)
satisfaction (in the case of function): func_eval(Object-A*Object-B)
satisfaction (in the case of function): func_eval(Object-A, Object-B) (binary evalation function)
[B] In the case of modality.
I do not do this now. But it will be more interesting.
From the vision of universal human needs, the feeling of satisfaction comes precisely from achieving coverage not only of each of the basic needs, but of the entire spectrum of existing needs. When that happens, it is feasible that you have not only achieved physical and internal homeostasis, but the feeling of unique happiness will also be notable, not the result of pleasure, but precisely of the feeling of satisfaction achieved, and which is much more lasting and constant than that achieved by pleasure.
Sorry, I used the incorrecto word in my previous answer. Here is the right expresión.
From a psychological perspective, satisfaction is an emotional reaction triggered by the experience of CONSISTENCY between something expected or desired and the observed reality or experience.
@Jaime Bravo-Déctor Thank your very much for your answer. I was very much moved by your word 'existing needs'. I think that I have to make the concept of satisfaction wider, because it can be further seen from the viewpoint of economicas, informartics, sociology, medical science, pharmacy, evolution, genetics, neurosciense, behavior science, business administration, and so on. I appriciate your answer in such a point that it makes my thought deeper.
Yes, the answers to the quesiton is indeed mutlitile-faceted. Since man's heart is so complicated, it is very difficult to unveil all kinds of desires for full satisfaction.
@Paul Kuei-chi Tseng Thank you very much for further discussion on this question. Certainly. So it may be OK only if one facet of it is deeply understood. There would be common form in it, I think. Also it is good to derive some useful concept or way of thinking, considering the question.
Satisfaction is the act of fulfillment of a need or want. In research, Satisfaction is a pleasurable fulfillment response resulting from an evaluation concerning how well the consumption of a product or service meets a need, desire, or goal
@Flordelis Jubay Thank you very much for your definitive answer to describe satisfaction very well. By the way, I wonder if there is an absolute satisfaction, although satisfaction is subject to each person and it is rather relative.
self-satisfaction is the end of one's creation; man should stay unsatisfied about himself. He needs to stay more ambitious, creative and modest; and this can't be fulfilled only through self-dissatisfaction.
Malika Meherhera Thank your very much for your answer. I agree with you on that self-satisfaction is the end of one's creation, very much. If possible, I would ask you about more explanation on the last sentence: that is, this can't be fulfilled only through self-dissatisfaction. Though I could imagine what you think.
By this sentence , I mean that ceation, innovation and the desire of reaching relative perfecion need from man to be self-dissatisfied, of course about his current achievements. Therefore, the strong feeling of dissatisfaction about one's performence represents a strong motivation to create, innovate and help reach relative perfection.
I'm sorry if I concentrate on relativity in reaching perfection, because the absolute one is our God's perfection.
Malika Meherhera I agree with you on the explanation for the sentence you meant except for the things concerning the god. I think that man needs a few or possibly many fulfilments of small dreams in order to reach real satisfaction. The fulfilments would give man the strength of power to live. Of course, dissatisfaction along with being living needs to be occurred and overcome as you said. Dissatisfaction would be good motivations to reach relative perfection you meant.
thanks a lots sir. I respect your point of view. and my claim does't never oppose to what you called small dream as long as these ones don't make us think of self-satisfaction, which means the end of creation!!
To live as being is a satisfaction. This satisfaction is also a fate, a duty and a delight if one lives, and it is meaningful if one thinks positively. This is a hymn to live.
this idea is provided in our religion Islam : man must express his satisfaction towards all beautiful things our god creates ang gives to all creatures. Life is one of these beautiful thigs. And then, satisfactionis a way to say thanks our great creature.
