What is your definition of leadership?

Leadership is when someone decides to lead different people in the search for a common ideal.

It looks like those countries with very weak rulers (USA, Brazil & Mexico) are faring the worst in the crisis. Management is important, but if your leader is hopeless not too many people follow the rules.

COVID-19 crisis created a human crisis as well. It hit hard human life-disrupting transportation and caused losses of jobs. The ‘survive’ has been the prime matter for many, and people need optimism. It may be possible by visionary leadership and their pragmatic influences and policy. They should raise hope. First, need to make a favorable environment and, turn to management.

Should leadership or management come first is the same conundrum as which came first the chicken or the egg. The reality is that one cannot exist without the other making them equally important. Just as one cannot survive without both a brain and heart even though they seemingly have totally different roles they are non the less codependent. Great leadership demands dual roles of giver (application for purpose) and receiver ( purpose to meaning making) in order to collaborate knowledge of developing and maintaining common good for the variety of human assembly performances based on the presumption that everyone from conception to death has a purpose of some sort. Collaborating those diverse purposes is a major challenge especially in world wide applications. Without interconnectedness to management who also serve in dual roles being sandwiched between mass population and leadership will only grow into tyranny which can only result in resentful division if not outright revolution--neither will bring about premium performance because the balance is far too precarious to be reliable with certainty. Fear of the king/queen is fraught with fear of retaliation simmered in hate where as love for the king/queen develops loyalty evolved from respect.

I think that first, in any crisis situation we need to a leader to keep the focus, the hope and order. Second, of course, we need to manager hole these things to keep people on the right path and organized to aim teh target.

It is not possible in any absolute sense (except by Saints?) but it makes an enormous amount of difference if an individual is 80/20 one way as opposed to other .....

Yes Kheepe Lawrence Moremi , it is possible. However, it depends on the role, because we can't have conflict of interestes in this situation. For example, if I am the project manager and it is necessary a internal audit in budget of project, I couldn't do this role. Taking out this interests conflict, it is not only possible as totaly commom to me. There is other important situation, each role has a goal and boundaries, so people need to have sure about what role is being in each moment.

In general, Joan Oliveira Leite are these functions performed by two (2) different individuals or one (1). Put differently, can a manager be a leader and can a leader be a manager?

Okay Kheepe Lawrence Moremi , in the one hand, The manager is a role determined by enterprise or institution that provide the job opportunity. In this case, the manager can be the leader too, but it depends on profile and skills of the manager. On the other hand, some one can be the leader, but not necessarily the manager. Even more because the leadership is a role that can be sazonal, to manager a project or some task force.

One thing beyond a shadow of doubt is that the "immediacy" of the crises or situation requiring higher guidance as an either/or significant factor/variable plays an enormous role as to blending or hierarchical approaches. Examples: Natural or manmade disaster or accident occurs-- resulting in an immediate life or death situation in which urgency demands action irrespective of legislative technicalities such as conflict of interest or official titles with job limiting boundaries. At these all to often societal moments in life action becomes bound to moral conviction and sense of survival in which multiple individuals are collectively and collaboratively leaders and managers simultaneously. Only after the initial and most impactive necessities pertaining to survival needs are met does the time consuming delegations come in to play. Unfortunately this often slows urgent progress by proxy of technicalities. Policy makers would do well to consider a more iterative less linear approach to managing the majority--acknowledging the majority has already learned self-reliance when it comes to emergency situations albeit many but not most times through unethical means.

Kheepe Lawrence Moremi Not only I but many others I know who have contributed life saving measures are convinced firefighters, police officers, doctors/nurses, basic frontline people who are leaders and managers governed through legislative management including political/academia/scientific managers and leaders all show up after the initial immediacy trigger. Stop signs are put in after death from a vehicle crash, emergency plans are created after terrorist attack or mother-nature wipes out communities, and when flora/fauna species are endangered and laws are created and/or changed after an incident is brought to attention. This bred the saying "When the going gets tough the tough get going" referring to ordinary people who are legitimately hidden heroes. So yes "immediacy of the situation plays a significant part in the blending of leadership and management." Policy makers show wisdom when they collaborate with what I have coined "collective wisdom of lived experience experts"

Are you able to apply your chosen context to the American crises of "police management" concerning "black lives matter" leadership? This is a very iterative and emergent movement with extreme influence from both perspectives of judicial management and grass roots leadership.

Bruce Lloyd I found the values based leadership journal link very intriguing and quite inline with my perspective for the most part, the exception being I favor a more iterative rather than linear process-although I fully appreciate the idea of using linear applications as a measuring tool through an iterative process. With that said real wisdom is required for the 5-generation decision making approach I fully believe in (grand children, children, , parents, grand parents) which is best accomplished by egalitarian (responsibility/value driven)participation. I'm also a stout advocate that with freedom comes responsibility, with education comes obligation to being morally and ethically responsible for ones own actions/inactions in a broader societal stage in conjunction with ones own personal world of calendered affairs. Through this lens leadership and management are indeed two sides of the same silver dollar with the third ridge side representing the uneducated (allowing for experience as education), vulnerable, and otherwise unseeing the need for responsible value driven 5-generation/broader societal obligation. In short this means clean air, water & soil healthy food, stable shelter, and proper hygiene as essentials to safe and secure living for everyone. It takes the whole silver dollar to overcome overpopulation and depleting resources. A world of silver dollars is needed to repair, establish, and replenish earths resources just to sustain the planet, flora, founa, and educate the human species for global well-being.

But in my post I was referring to what it is still happening in the region of the Guayaquil city in Ecuador, where the contamination by SARS-CoV-20 is very severe, the mayor says in a statement that half of the population is infected.

Kheepe Lawrence Moremi Questions of owning ones utility comes up in the CoV2/Covid 19 pandemic experience. For example leadership policy in the USA is disjointed, people engaged in daily affairs are on edge, arguments and fights are breaking out in the most common places like the post office and grocery store where ordinary employees are assuming managerial responsibilities to keep the peace. Certain curious people cannot help but to notice the change in social mors that is expanding exponentially with phenomena beyond the individuals who make up the whole without even realizing their part. At first glance one could blame inequalities of capitalism as a major contributor to this state of chaos looking through the Marxism alienation lens only to second guess cause and effect after acknowledging the entire planets leadership institutions are jaded and experiencing chaotic social unrest regardless of which theoretical leadership is used to govern the people. This gives at least some weight to the management factor as an extremely important utility. Again not an effective solution in of itself since it too ignores the basic need for healthy societies to live by the ancestral Native (American) Indian 5-generation principle of one for all and all for one. But this too is flawed because it requires universal cooperation that is nearly impossible with so many people having evolved into predatory mindsets such as dog eat dog world, get you before you get me, greed, and control over others all of which breed contempt. Without egalitarian social values and ethics which are exceptionally rare the human race will not ever thrive as a healthy happy society. We all must be characteristically invested in order for all of us to unite. How do we change social structures on a grand scale to achieve such high standards of coexistence? Are leaders and managers even capable of accepting and paving the way for such utopian lifestyles? Would they be too caught up in the idea of sharing-therefore losing wealth (comes in many forms) beyond measure, power over resources and control of populations? In theory this hypothesis should exzube utopia but in reality experience is contextual. There lies the problem in that centuries of wrongdoing is not so easily dismissed, forgiven, and rectified. Wherever the human species goes to colonize they will take with them centuries of predatory evolution and will thus forever be fraught with morals and ethics of leadership and management that is condemned to inequality of some sort.

One of the principles of management is leadership. Thus, management has a broader meaning compered to leadership. It is very difficult to draw a comparison between a broad head (management) and one of its constituents (leadership) and then choose one. Hence, if given a choice between these two, it will be better to choose management. Management includes leadership.

In what way does management lead to leadership?

Many people during this pandemic are suffering and what they care for is having somebody who cares for them. However, knowing the person holistically will ensure better management and leadership in caring not only for the individual involved, but also for their relatives and significant others. The question then is: How is one going to understand the individual holistically if we do not know the environmental, personal and developmental needs of the individual while undergoing stress?

Stressors are various and these can intersect with the daily on-going relationships. What causes stress to one individual may not be so to another. Lazarus and Folkman (1984) stated that stress may be positive or negative which makes this even complicated to understand others unless the whole individual is assessed with a caring and loving approach.

Also Professor Patricia Benner (1984) in her Novice to Expert identified how much nurses encounter 'stories' of nurses who care for patients and they have to manage and lead the way in care. Therefore, learning to manage well will lead to leadership because others will follow the example through understanding, and education and knowledge which are the basics for a caring community.
