Can we use fly ash as fill matrix in Reinforced Earth wall construction?
Angle of friction is (φ) angle made between applied force and normal force when the body is placed on some surface is just on the point of sliding.
The use of waste materials as fill for reinforced soil structures is desirable from an environmental as well as economic point of view. Coal based thermal power stations produce massive quantities of coal ash. These are mainly 2 types of ashes - the lighter one goes up the stack and collected by mechanical or elector-static precipitator. This is known as Fly ash. The other fraction containing coarser materials are collected at the bottom of the furnace. This is known as bottom ash.Fly ash is about 90% of total coal ash and poses serious environmental and disposal problem.
The use of stabilized fly ash as light weight fill in embankment construction has therefore become common. It is usually placed after compacting by vibratory rollers.Compaction is done at optimum moisture content.
Fly ash is very widely used in R E Wall construction.
Fly ash has been successfully used as fill material in reinforced soil walls however it has to be ensured that the angle of friction is not less than 300 and PI plasticity Index is less than 6.
In other words the soil is cohesion less soil .
