As an early-career researcher, I am wondering what is an appropriate time to follow up the submitted manuscripts. Some of my papers have been under reviewed for a year. I am afraid if I get rejected, my papers will be outdated and possibly be denied by other journals.

If you go for the most popular/higher ranked journals it is not uncommon to be waiting for a response for up to 18 months.
sometimes, especially for you first paper(s) it may be worth considering submitting to a less prestigious journal just to get something peer reviewed and published. Papers are like kisses, getting your first can be hard but thereafter it becomes easier
You might want to check their past issues how long it took for most articles to get published before contacting them. However, I think 10-12 months might be an appropriate time for you to ask about its progress. Thats what I did and then I found out that they had problems getting the right reviewers to read my Manucript.

At early career, I suggest you co-author with your senior colleagues, mentor, or even your advisor. They have more experience than us and can guide you in which direction you should take. I am new too and take a similar track as I suggested to you.
All of these are good suggestions. In my field of Counseling, it is fairly common for Editors to provide their decision and reviewer feedback within 3 months. So, after 3 months it is a good idea to check with a reviewer. As the editor of a Counseling journal I included this recommendation (i.e., contact me if more than 3 months or 12 weeks have passed and you haven't received an editorial decision) to follow up with me directly. I agree that it depends on the Journal, but more prestigious journals do not necessarily take longer because in some cases, the more prestigious journals also have excellent organization, pay for their editorial assistants and potentially pay for other editorial members, more Associate Editors, and many more reviewers. As an editor, I would rather an author err on the side of contacting me too early, than have an author remain silent for too long. I would never resent an author for checking on the status of their manuscript.

I totally agree with Professor Mark B. Scholl .I really hope that some prestigious journals should have managed the manuscripts in the way that you suggested. The trouble is that I followed with the editors after passing more than 12 months but it is still silent. T.T
Depends on the field and the journal. I think you should wait at least 6 months, then you can check the overall publication time of the journal, etc., and ask it nicely to the editor if you think it already took longer than average.
