By what units do we read? Linguists argue if it is a syllable or a morpheme (letters and words are less likely). Psychologists say that reading is a process, so its units must be processes as well (operations), not objects. Seems reasonable, but what operations? Russian psycholinguistics hasn't found an answer yet, Western science looks like never had this question in mind. The Chinese don't have such a problem - they read by characters which are both syllables and morphemes. But what about us, alphabetic readers?
