Before answering who is a researcher I would like to define research.

Research is a systematic approach towards purposeful investigation. It always begins with a question or a problem. It needs formulation of hypothesis, collection of data, analysis, interpretation of results, reaching to a certain generalization, and finally publication in the form of a good research paper.

Thus a researcher is a person who performs academic activities by putting systematized efforts to gain new knowledge and find answers to some unanswered questions and thereby works for the welfare of the society.

To simplify things. a researcher who lives in a region that is swimming in economic and environmental problems. H is a prof with a long white hair, but his imprint are absent like a man of science, like a person who gives solutions. He didn't do anything for the society. Is he a reseacher is your eyes?

Dear Abderrahmane Khechekhouche, we as a researcher are supposed to do the work for the welfare of the society. If unfortunately Prof H (you call it) with a long white hair is giving solutions to the problems then certainly he is a researcher. This prevailing time belongs to computer era, so if imprints are not available then data can be uploaded and definitely someday those data will be analysed by a laborious student. Thereby the work of that ''Prof H'' will be helpful to the society in the coming time. So, in my view ''Prof H'' who does not has imprints of his research but he is solving the problems is certainly a Researcher.

I agree with the definition of research and researcher formulated by Mahesh. But this definition concerns only applied research. Theoretical or pure research is another thing and stems mainly from the "curiosity" of the researcher.

Applied research seeks immediate application solutions to solve current problems. Pure or theoretical research addresses issues that do not necessarily involve solutions that are applicable in the short to medium term or perhaps do not involve any applicable solutions at all. However, theoretical research enriches the cultural heritage of humanity and is propaedeutic to applied research. It is not possible to do applied research without a considerable scientific baggage deriving from theoretical research, ie it is not possible to do applied research without having done very much theoretical research.

The primary objective of research and researcher is to study and understand how the universe is made and how it works: out of pure curiosity (theoretical research); to exploit the laws of nature in order to improve the life of man, of all other living beings and of the environment in which we all live (applied research).

Therefore, a researcher is: a curious person, a person with considerable and very big fantasy, a person with great intuition, an intellectually unscrupulous person (who does not have intellectual taboos, that is, if necessary, questions the old scientific certainties and theories), a person that have more doubts than certainties. Moreover, if the researcher, in addition to the aforementioned qualities, is also endowed with a pinch of intelligence then he is a genius.
