Regarding disturbances in European forests, annual average of about 8.1% of the total felling (i.e. 35 million m3 of wood) was damaged by disturbances in Europe over the period 1950–2000 (Schelhaas et al. 2003, Glob Change Biol 9: 1620–1633).
In Slovakia, annual average of sanitary felling is 48% of total fellings over past 28 years (1986–2013).
UPDATE (Dec 2, 2014): Over the period 1950–2000, ca. 75 million m3 of wood was damaged (and felled) only in Slovakia. Thus a pan-European estimate by Schelhaas et al. has to be considerably underestimated...
What about other European countries? What is the percentage (volume) of total fellings being damaged by disturbances?

In AUSTRIA sanitary fellings in forests is very high. We like our forests much for wellnes walking, mountainbikeing, hunting. i like it for nature jogging especially. We have a very rigid forest act, so that clear cutting is free only for 0,30 hectars without allowance. Nice greetings, Johann
In Romania, the silviculture is ruled after more ecological than economical policy. So, the sanitary cuttings are restrict to 1-5 m3/year/ha, so the highest part of these cuttings (mass dying / decline, wind & snow falling/breaking, bark beetle or defoliator attack, fungi infection, etc.) are included into "accidental cuttings" (all need allowance).

In Romania, in 2013 was harvested 3,6 mil cubic meters( incidental fellings )from the total 9,582 mil. cubic meters .(37,57%)

in Slovenia In period 1995-2012, 30 % of harvest was sanitary felling. Insects (34 %), wind (14 %), snow (10 %), icestorm (8 %), fire 0,2 %, while other causes represent 33 % (diseases and fungi attacks, tree injuries, ungulates, landslides, unknown reasons). Insects and wind affects larger diameter trees (20-35cm), while snow and ice damage thinner stands (15-25 cm) (Poljanec et al., 2014).
