We are doing research using Clostridium ljungdahlii bacteria. When growing C. ljungdahlii bacteria in DSMZ 879 medium, we found a black precipitate in the inoculum, which did not appear in the previous inoculum. We did a positive gram staining test on the inoculum, the result was a type of rod-shaped bacteria. Our question is, what is the black precipitate? is it a bacterial contamination that has the same shape as C. ljungdahlii, or a by-product of the reaction? Has anyone experienced the same thing?
