If this case, a drone either gets down or returns home as per the features annexed. Usually a pre-installed warning system notifies you when the battery is low. Still, the pilots are suggested to keep a constant eye on the battery status of the drone.
Christian – things have vastly improved in recent commercial drone models. We used to work with an Aibotix Aibot X6 that only gave a battery voltage reading on the remote control. That was terrible because Li-Ion batteries don’t discharge linearly – they decay very rapidly during take-off, then are quite stable for a relatively long time, then have accelerated discharge again. That can be dangerous, and we crashed the 40,000 Euro drone when we through we had enough juice left but then motors stopped when the drone was still some 5 m above the ground. Most modern drones have a minute-indicator that is quite reliable, though I’d always fly in a way as to not max that out, always leaving a spare of a few minutes (say 5 minutes for a drones that flies for 20 minuets max).
