In light of the announcement that the projects feature is going to be removed, I could not find any clear information on what is going to happen to the papers that were uploaded to RG as part of a certain project. Will these papers remain in my profile or are they going to be removed together with the whole projects feature? Can a paper be disconnected from a project for that matter?

I might be in a similar situation with other co-authors having put the papers as part of THEIR projects, not mine. (I am just disorganised!) The paper was first registered on RG as an independent paper.
I would think that the entry as a paper would remain but it is no longer considered as part of a project. That would mean that all of the co-authors would still get credit for a future citation. That would make sense to me.
I very regret about the decision to retire projects in RG. This was a good possibility to order publications by subjects, to inform the community about the progress of own long-term projects, and to get informed about the progress of projects of other researchers. - You may try to contact RG's support team at https://www.researchgate.net/contact. If many users complain, perhaps the decision will be revised. I have sent my opinion to them.

It is possible that the papers will remain in our profile and be disconnected from the project, but it is also possible that they will be removed altogether along with the projects feature. I received the following reply from a member of the ResearchGate Community Support concerning my expression of regrets about the retirement of projects: "While we understand your feelings regarding this decision, we are aiming to provide a better experience for researchers like yourself to showcase your work and stay up to date. To that end, we plan to release multiple features this year to make it easier to share updates, discover new research, and engage with topics. We hope you will join us as we continue to make ResearchGate a more useful tool for all researchers."
