Hi I am a student pursing my final year in mechanical engineering. I am doing crash analysis of the car frame in Ansys software in explicit dynamics module. I had my analysis running for 2-3 days and finally came as general failure. But when I lower my number of cycles the result came quickly. What exactly the software does by reducing the cycles.

The default of (number of cycles) is 1X10^7. You can reduce it to 1000, it will solve the problem in short running time but it may not reach the end time you had set. Thus you can test your model with small number of cycles, when you satisfy your solution, you set it back to 1X10^7.
It depends. in some problem your simulation may diverge.
generally by reducing the step your simulation time is reduced and result is obtained faster, but the results accuracy may reduce or diverge at all.

Two points are important. It's a trade of between time allotted for solving and stand off distance between the object.
