First of all, I failed to find out any article on how software industry looks at the issue of sustainability. Should I use an analogy like advocating for logical green economics? I hardly understand, so please help. I don't think much info is available on the factors and there is hardly any agreement especially on the issue of how consumers behave with regard to the overall sustainability of a software product.
Fundamently, flexible software architecture can enhance the sustainability, but in the perspective of end-item od software product, it can be affected by maintain or customer- support program(e.g., upgrade) or release management of product, ... in my thought.
I think the human factors in aspect of Software Requirement Engineering and Software Design such as an architecture have an effect on the sustainability. Because the early processes of software project foredoom the end of the project
Hi, this question has been on my mind for a long time. It started with a paper written in 2013 (Mustaquim and Nyström) that explored how sustainability goals could be attained by using universal design principles. This research was further developed in a paper (Mustaquim and Nyström, 2014) that resulted an inclusive innovation framework and a requirement engineering model that could be used as tools for building an information system with sustainability goals. In another paper from 2014 (Nyström and Mustaquim) we proposed a framework for sustainable system development life cycle (SSDLC). Perhaps these papers can help you a little.
Generally what we emphasise is the inclusion of more stakeholders in the design of the system and to build the system flexible to make it resilient especially since sustainability is multidimensional/very complex and needs a holistic approach. I agree with your findings that there seems to lack insight about how the software industry looks at this. I likewise agree that there is a disagreement on the behaviour of consumers in this context.
