In the past whenever I had a problem I used to ran to my manager and ask for help. Nowadays nobody know about very many things. My boss doesn’t know much about computer on his desk or how google does its search. Most if not all lectures are very narrowly based. The question is where engineering student should get their knowledge? How much they know should know and how they know it.
Please share your thoughts.
Hi Sirous, in my perspective the students in this times (not only engineers) need to develop the capacity to deconstruct problems in ways that helps them plan solutions, and then they need to learn how to extract and use information present in the texts.
What i'm trying to say here is that students need to be able to identify a problem, then think about the type of knowledge they need to solve it (practical, theory, math, etc) and after that they should be able to look for that "Specific Knowledge Holder Text" so, if i need to write scripts it might be a good idea to look into internet pages with a community that focuses on that specific area, if i need to repair something a manual is the best way to find a solution for the problem, so it comes down to the ability to find the text that contains the knowledge needed at the moment and then apply that knowledge.

First of all they should know all the fundamental aspects of knowledge in there field and there related fields ( For example engineering student of Computer science should know the basics of electrical engg or electronic and more ). Once they know the fundamental knowledge of most subject and it also should be up to date, than ,if any problem comes he/she at least think multidimentionaly and may possible find the solution for it. We often use the very complex techniques first to solve the problems but some time solution of the problem present in fundamental things or in other than our subject.
Dear Sirous Yasseri you have asked very important question. This is a computer era, seems we are supposed to know better but computers are doing the hard work people are not expected to know many things, even a multiplication of simple numbers as calculator is doing the job and remembering your own number because of the smartphone. Human intelligence, without generalizing, is decreasing as we are not using our brain fully. These days, we don't even use your direction detecting nature, we have google map on mobile telling you where to go. As machines are getting smarter, we are going down the opposite path and I found this is really a threat to the existence of the human species.

Thank you for your input. 50 years ago an engineer knew a little bit about a lot of things. Now engineers know a lot of about a few things. The question is is this a healthy state or we should revive the old values.

This is the trend now a days. The industry or company is leading the education style. Companies are seeking someone with specific deep knowledge in something. This is a good thing to the companies not for the person, it make people depend on each other, should work together as they know little of a given project. As you said, 50 years ago, it was a different world...computers were not intelligent, hiring someone who had a general knowledge is very feasible for employers.
