I have an Abaqus input file of a complex model. It is very time-consuming to create a CAE model. I am wondering how crack definition can be added to the input file. Material id gray cast iron and the actual item suffers from a corrosion crack. The task is at what load (pressure in the case) the crack starts propagating.

The problem is here mainly file writing, and more specifically with XFEM enrichment of the mesh... I would try the three following options.
1- File permitting ... create another simple CAE problem with and without crack propagation and check differences between the two input files of this simpler problem. This will tell what to add in your file if not too complicated.
The difficulty with CAE is that node numbers are not added in order in the geometry but rather randomly, which is going to be a pain...
2- Alternative is to write a python (or other) code to extract info in the inp file and then work on it.
3- Use another program that can modify your original input file, modify the geometry and rewrite input file to import in Abaqus
Else, the only choices are to ask original CAE or create new one ... :)

Have you tried re-importing the .inp file? Some things can get lost, but for simple models it works fine, then you can add whatever you need. Even if things get lost, you can write out the new file with the crack and merge the appropriate parts of the text files?

The input file I have is for the strength analysis of the piece. This is a translation of a NASTRAN file. The original file did not have the crack description.
I can send the input file to you, if you think you would have a better luck than me with it.
What I was trying to say is to read in the .inp file and setup the crack analysis in CAE. You can define the crack seam or XFEM in CAE. There are resources you can find online to get you started, such as this one: https://info.simuleon.com/blog/modelling-a-crack-using-abaqus
