I have mite specimens stored at -80C for eventual extraction of DNA. They are "dry" - i.e. not in ethanol or any other buffer or preservative. Our -80C freezer has started breaking down, and needs to be switched off for repairs. Can I move my specimens to a -20C for about 2 weeks while repairs take place? And what effect will this have on the long-term integrity of the DNA? The oldest specimens have been stored for 5 years, and I envision I may still be storing them for another 2 to 3 years before processing.
