Hello, I am currently performing an experiment and need a visual aid for the media which is currently clear. The dye needs to be non-toxic and would not stain the cells in any way. Would regular food dye be safe to use with human stem cells? Should I just use phenol red or other commonly used media pH indicators?

As far as I know the pH indicators that are used in different culture media are
1. Phenol Red
pH range: 6.8 (yellow)- 8.4 (red)
2. Bromothymol Blue
pH range: 6.0 (yellow)- 8.0 (blue)
3. Neutral Red
pH range: 6.8 (red)- 8 (yellow)
But as Yang Ti mentioned, phenol red is the standard pH indicator used in various cell and tissue culture media, as it provides a quick check for the health of the culture. It has been used as a pH indicator dye in tissue culture media for decades. This indicator allows for observation of cell culture pH change that can arise from dying cells, overgrowth of contaminating bacteria, and accumulation of waste products.
