Aside possessing educational qualifications and on-the-job experience, what really makes an excellent and impactful Professor? Sharing is caring. Thanks!!!
I am usually rated very highly by my students, and I asked myself "why" for a long time. I do not want to sound narcissistic or display false modesty in any way. But, I think what has made me excellent and impactful by my students is in part what I teach (business) aligns with my doctorate (that is not always the case) and that I have substantial experience in the field (I was in Fortune 500 and then I started my own corporation). Still, most importantly, I genuinely love teaching and I love my students (storge and agape, not eros). My love of students means I will tutor after hours, I visit students in the hospital, I listen to their fears and concerns, and I wrote a eulogy & nurtured an entire grieving family when they lost their daughter (my student) ... I am more like an older Uncle than a stiff-shirted stranger.
Be careful with "influential"; as misinterpreted, it is disastrous. e.g., influential politically, power plays, personified self-interest. If one wants to be influential and a role model, put your students/people first; understand them and then create and deliver on VALUE-ADDED knowledge, skills, or competencies. Basically it is others before the self, but the self must stand out as a person who delivers what is best and in the interest of others. What you teach must be substantially different and inter-disciplinary, be able to extract the golden nuggets of integrated knowledge.,
