It could be rRNA contaminant. Treat your sample with RNAse A to test it.

what if its used to test the presence of a genetic marker? Besides first thought of contamination.

Jan is likely right, unless you have a very degraded DNA sample. You should see a smear in your lane on an agarose gel. Treat with RNAse. Not sure what's your point about genetic marker, but RNAse won't affect that.
