Recent IUPAC recommendations suggest to distinguish in the periodic table only non-metallic and metallic chemical elements, except for metalloids. I think that this is a bad solution. As for what changes may bring for a group of specialists in the field of chemistry, I understand this attitude and accept them as not causing major problems. However, I believe that attempting to impose such a solution is a huge mistake in terms of chemistry teaching, especially at the level of core courses.
