Scientific journals are really a big business. They don't pay for content or review. It is sad an annoying they charge the researchers with a fee for publishing their papers.
Fees for publishing in academic journals have been rising steadily in the last 4-5 years. And what's really unbealievable is that we pay twice for them: as researchers in order to publish and as readers through our library.
I say no. No journal should charge authors. That's like asking for a bribe, and it denigrates the journal, the readers, as well as the author. If an author is trying to make money on one of their publications, say a book about one's life or favorite topic, then sure, maybe it's okay to pay for publication but usually that's to a book publisher, not a journal, correct?
I understand that the fee for participation in the conference is needed because organizing a conference is expensive. But getting higher and higher fees for publishing and accepting for the review, for which the publisher does not pay, is unacceptable.
First, note that conference publications usually do not carry the same weight of respectability as journals. Besides, no conferences that I know of charge for presenting a paper at the conference or for having that paper published in the conference proceedings. Both authors and non-authors are normally charged the same conference fee, so registration costs at a conference is not related to the principal issue you have raised.
What do you think about whether a scientist should pay for publishing his research results in scientific journals?
Scientist should not pay for their publication...provided the research is of significant value....truly speaking nowadays most of the publications are just for the sake of securing degree...or university's requirement of 2 or 3 papers....because of such issue scientific publications has lost the dignity...this is what i think ....
I agree with your opinion that " scientific journals should finance themselves and not collect fees from scientists "; however, the open-access model of publishing aims to facilitate the reading of publications without the need of either institutional, or personal subscriptions. Under this model, I guess it is OK to pay them article processing fees as it may be considered as an indirect personal subscription of limited readers (i.e. also authors) on the behalf of all the readership . Otherwise, you may select the other publishing model i.e. publishing in subscription journals.
