Henry Ford established mass production techniques based on methods of breaking the tasks into small repetitive steps that will be done by labor trained for that task. Highly repetitive and meant for large production volumes. The main change that has taken place is the increasing need for flexibility. This requires the labor to be multitasking and involved in the production process thereby giving them more satisfaction.
Fordism and Taylorism, so it seems to me, are triumphant in the academic life. Scholars, academicians, and researchers have all entered into this crazy race for massive intellectual production.
We cannot enjoy the birth of a book or a paper for we start immediately to work on the next one. It's literally a chain production. Our universities have entered into this crazy circle for rankings, impacts, and the like. À la lettre, scholars and scientists have become - well, employees. And as employees they are supposed to work accordingly to this stage of informational capitalism (M. Castells), aiming at entering into the knowledge society.
Past are the times when researchers enjoyed their freedom.
Can you imagine someone like Descartes, or Newton, f.i., having long years without any production? Currently a researcher is to "produce" (catch the term!) much more than a paper a year, a book every one or two years...
