Is Human Nature Fundamentally Selfish or Altruistic? our college Moraru asked. Is this question already enough to find out a solution to save our planet?
Is it may be not black or White, but the golden cut with about 1/3 selfish-individualistic and 2/3 altruistic-collective which can make us survive...
or / and what else do you recommend and try to put into (personal/official) practice?
What role should the United Nations play?

Confronting a hostile nature, people used innovative techniques to lay down a solid foundation not just for basic survival, but for sustainable development. Their activities include sinking two boreholes with immersed pumps to provide water; getting agriculture up and running; introducing new crops and regenerating flora which were becoming extinct.

I think that the Club of Rome (Meadows et al) in 1970s started to think first about survival of our planet. That time our population was just below 4 billion people, but high growth of pollution and shrink of biodiversity have been observed. That time it was not yet the danger for ecological subsystem of humans, but ecological system of the Earth was already out of equilibrium. It was not too late to take collective action to preserve this ecosystem, and Malthusian approach to population control could be a part of the story. Instead of that, since 1990s we have observed growth in income polarization, emergence of ethnic conflicts globally and too little care about global sustainability. Yes, there are ecologists, but the voice of economists (who do not see the problem yet because markets do not detect it) is stronger.
Yes, a group of selfish people need (a bit) more resources for survival than a group of altruists. I think that more altruism is only part of the story, but it alone is no longer sufficient.
Dear Professor Heise,
Humans are biologically (genetically) selfish (sensu Richard Dawkins, in The Selfish Gene), but due to our evolved sentience/intelligence, many of us are also capable of overriding our natural selfish impulses and drives (the primordial genetic imperative that screams-at-us from our deepest psyche "REPLICATE!" ... and the selfish-drive to garner enough resources to secure the survival of our offspring ... which selfish-drive, as you have noted, seems to have run-amok in about one-third of the human population), and realize/reason that altruistic behavior (today) is often in our/their better (long-range) survival interest.
The only realistic/workable solution to salvation of the planet is a severe reduction in the number of humans populating it.

Bob

Dear Thomas,
The golden cut is a happy phrase. I think surviving = altruism because only the survival together can be the solution. Conditions must be mutual understanding, self-criticism, intelligence and ethics. Each condition is difficult to own and develop mainly at society level. Equally available education and democratic conditions could help.
Dear Bob,
I agree with your diagnose, however the trouble is that the “many of us” as a demographic factor cannot be sufficient.
Thanks to all for the answers with cordially involvement.
Dear Krishnan, i do not believe in the term hostile nature.
Nature is not hostile, it just is as it is. Only we as a part also of nature think and act as Special beings and think we can be independent from nature and dominate it by will and at will. -- But this is fundamentally wrong and if we do not Change, mother earth will punish us children who do not listen to mothers complaints are punished by her at the end.
Best regards,
Thomas
Altruism, compassion and collaboration from everyone.
"We need a little more compassion, and if we cannot have it then no politician or even a magician can save the planet"

Even if our nature is benign we must strive to overcome the sometimes irrational behavior of our collective which follows misguided selfish individuals

Climate Change!
"We must limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees. We are far from there, and even that is enough to cause dire consequences. If we continue along the current path, we are close to a 6 degree increase".
"Too many leaders seem content to keep climate change at arm’s length, and in its policy silo. Too few grasp the need to bring the threat to the centre of global security, economic and financial management. It is time to move beyond spending enormous sums addressing the damage, and to make the investments that will repay themselves many times over". -
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
http://www.un.org/en/globalissues/climatechange/
Human activity is putting such a strain on the natural functions of the Earth that the ability of the planet’s ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. Ours is allegedly a science-based culture. For decades, our best science has suggested that staying on our present growth-based path to global development implies catastrophe for billions of people and undermines the possibility of maintaining a complex global civilization. The problem for sustainability is that the perpetual growth myth knows no ecological bounds. Mainstream academic models of the economy make no functional reference to the ecosystems that contain it. Collateral damage to “the environment” is considered to be a mere “negative externality” that can be corrected by appropriate pricing (e.g., pollution charges or taxes)

A New Climate!
"The only solution for drastic reduction in the potential risk is to discard the scenario in which the exploitation of fossil fuels is the primary source of energy. A new global agreement that would initiate the discarding of this scenario is due to be adopted in December this year, at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris. Preparations for this meeting are already well underway, and the Parties will present the intended nationally determined contributions to the reduction of global emissions by autumn of 2015. The primary objective of the future agreement is to limit future emissions to a level that will ensure that a further rise in global mean temperature over the next few decades is at a maximum of 2°C. Resolute and rapid implementation of this agreement will be the next key step because the agreement itself is not a solution, something that is unfortunately a lesson learned considering some previously failed plans and international agreements. If an agreement is reached, the question will remain as to why it took decades to reach it and whether it was really necessary for climate change to become so obvious in order to start a wide mobilization of the society to address this problem.
There is no doubt that the issue of climate change in Serbia needs to be highly positioned on the social agenda. The region to which Serbia belongs was in many studies rated as one of the most vulnerable. In the coming years we must be willing to set clear objectives regarding both national plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and plans to adapt to future changes. Accession to the European Union, which is often cited as one of the national priorities, implicitly presumes that, at some point, we shall also adopt the very high standards in terms of emission reductions. On the other hand, most of the adaptation measures, such as the development of irrigation systems in agriculture, efficient and rational use of water resources and the improved protection of natural resources, will contribute to the promotion of many sectors, even if we put aside the future climate change.
The global community of today must be resolved to preserve the climate of the planet we live on as our resource and not as a limitation for the future development of society."
Energy Transformation for a Sustainable World
"The greatest challenge for humanity is to achieve economic and social development while remaining within the safe operating space for a stable planet. To achieve this, rapid and equitable deployment of decarbonization technologies and systems are needed at all scales to improve energy efficiencies and to decrease emissions. This will require significant investments and research and development..."

Today all speak about climate change. 40 years ago nobody was naming it even among top 10 environmental dangers. It is indeed important, but many things are still not clear for geophysicists. However, the stress from human economic activity on natural environmental system supporting both our life, economy and all living beings on the Earth is now often neglected. Just have a look at this Living Planet Report: http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/all_publications/living_planet_report/
I also recommend to read a book by Brian Czech "Supply shock"; https://supplyshock.org/brian-czech/
I think we have to evolve to become a better eco-friendly species. Because if we do not, we may end up like our bipedal ancestors (T-Rex) which was an exit of this planet through the back door. I believe that comet was just a final nail in the coffin for dinosaurs for their exit. Global warming and other eco-problems are just the symptoms or markers of what is just about to come. But earth will survive with or without us.
We should be nature friendly, not to violate natural laws. Such teaching should be given at all level and should form an universal movement.
I watched the documentary ''Where to Invade Next'' by Micheal Moore. Moore traveled in different European countries in order to steal some of the best ideas that America desperatly need. It end up that most of these ideas were original american ideas and most of them hinges on the idea of taking care of each other in very very simple ways that we know about already. No need for grand new ideas, new technological miracles , etc. It is simply a question on putting the societal focus on taking care of each other.
I agree with Napoleon. We can bring about the greatest minds of our kind but without unselfish behaviors, one system will always dominate another and skew the natural order of things, both physically, mentally, and spiritually. It may be the "peace on earth," we seek but a 'peaceful coexistence' may be all that we need. We cannot defy death or age. We can improve our situations but some parts in this cycle cannot change.
Napoleon,
I agree with you totally, but I think(in my biased opinion) it is coming a bit too late(I hope I am wrong and you are right). The reason for my saying this is that in my view the current state of affairs is:
1) overpopulation given the limited resources that we have at our disposal. This pits us against our fellow human beings as well as animals in a competition for the scarce resources.
2)The homeostasis of the planet has been broken. unless drastic measures are taken(which people with current interests being serve will oppose) the homeostasis will not be restored. This will in turn generate conflict (again).
Dear Napoleon,
Population has to be controled sooner than later. It is already under control in all the developed countries and in China which is far from being equally developed. This objective should be achieve everywhere by using the less contraining methods. Simple measure as providing a full education to all the girls, providing better health care and social security to old persons would do a long way towards this objective. But we have also have to remove the religious and cultural road blocks. But international cooperation and less greed will be necessary.
Dear Arturo,
When there is a will there is a way. I do not think that the current road blocks will indefinitly curtail this will.
If i read the question right :IMHO..
1.If it is about human survival..then we have a conundrum,!s it physical (i.e eternal living beings viz individually or as a species?) or is it transcendental (i.e consciousness ..again individual or universal ) .If we mean the former ..there is every confidence that human ingenuity and progress in science( DNA designed babies, artificial/grown organs etc ) will probably help in human survival in some form . If it is the latter we have a great deal of tidying up to do..for in this case the goal of universal love, acquisition of knowledge, humanity and ethics is clear to all enlightened minds but the means of expanding this into all of the human race is indeed dicey..given the affinity of humans to negative( ? )aspects of selfish-individualistic traits compared to the really immensely powerful potential of , a altruistic-collective trait.
2. The physical planet will survive or be absorbed into a black-hole at some point in time as predicted by many astronomical physicists (and recent NASA observation).
Cheers
"We’re all guilty. We forget our reusable totes at the grocery store and have to use Trader Joe's bags (and then miss out on their raffle contest). We let the shower run while we wait for it to warm up, and then we leave the house with phone chargers left in outlets. Though small on an individual scale, these missed energy-saving opportunities contribute to one heck of a global environmental footprint that’s fueling climate change.
The EPA reports that global temperatures are expected to rise by two to 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100. Stronger storms, frequent heat waves, and exacerbated ocean acidification are among the many effects expected from climate change.
It may seem easy blaming a few notorious greenhouse gas-producing industries like power and transportation. Though certain assailants are far worse for the environment than others -- take, for example, the 90 companies responsible for two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions -- we can all do better. Check out these common environmental offenses and suggestions on how to reverse our habits...."

Is The Mother Earth Shrieking?
"Even a plant or a tree which is in a shade, if not getting enough Sunlight, over a period bends and moves towards the Sunlight. Oasis in the middle of the desert tell us, water body is hidden there. Before a tempest or a cyclone, the animals get to know and behave a little erratically.
All these and much more evidence is available that, other animals communicate with nature in a much better way and probably, humans pig-headedly, refuse to read the Nature.
Also, human being inflicts all sorts of atrocities on Nature. In the name of civilization, Industrialization and building new cities we cut the trees senselessly, and have been responsible for huge deforestation....
Do we need to learn anything from this Natural calamity?..."

Nature (including people nature) will take its way. The cycle of life and very little-life on earth will continue. The extent of earth destruction is proportionate to the population of people. Once there are very few people, there will be very little destruction, and earth will recover, and there will be more people again, and the cycle will continue.
The human being is not hostile or competitive by nature, but altruistic and cooperative. From multiple disciplines such as religion, anthropology and medicine, the work presents empirical evidence of this fact, which contradicts the perception that our species is aggressive, selfish and hostile. Understanding the mechanisms that underlie our prosocial behaviors will help you understand why conflicts arise in the modern world, and also to find the best way to promote peaceful and productive interactions between humans.
Other than the catastrophic volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and global plate tectonic movements, the most destructive events that happened on earth are man-made (Hiroshima, Chernobyl, 3-mile island, massive deforestantion, nuclear reactor leaks, sucking geothermals, coal and oil plants, polluting motor vehicles, etc.). For their own survival, the propertied rulers promote "self-regulating" destruction ( slow destruction, but still destructive exploitation and utilization of Earth's resources). Only the natural cycle will save this Planet. People will not save it.
Eddie,
For hundred of thousand of years human had no capacity to understand their impacts on the planet. And until very recently this impact was negligeable. Just recently did we realize that this impact is catastrophic and amper our very survival. But never in the past of humanity we have been confronted to one common problem. We have not the kind of local nor global political processes allowing us to act in common. But the need will make it emerges.
Louis, the start of humanity that I know is based on religious claims (6000 years ago) and geologic assertions. But nobody really knows if it is really the real beginning or the beginning of a new cycle. But it is very clear, while we are divided in our opinions on a natural person's basic nature, and her/his capacity for diplomacy or aggression, one thing is clear and cannot be denied- people, not plants or animals- built and use the hydrogen, atomic and nuclear bombs. People- not animals or plants- wipe out hundred of thousand of hectares of trees for development and enrichment. People-not animals or plants- exploit Earth's resources from all directions- the bottom of the ocean bed, the underground aquifers, the winds, the sunlight, and the ground surface plants and animals (dead or alive) for convenience and practicality.
The problem is that animals cannot vote in our political and economic system. Also poor people have only political but not economic vote. Scientists can measure the level of disequilibrium in environmental system, but who are listening to them?
Yes, just a century ago mankind was not yet a threat to Nature, but now it is. We still can act cooperatively to save our planet. But is this the first priority for any politician?
Eddie,
It is easy to see that it is the case. But we have currently no way to translate a common conviction into action. We do not yet have an common action ''We''. We see the imperative to change direction but we do not yet see how awake a common will. It is divided in billion of small individual will that cannot connected yet. Facing this fact will make us see the paths of the connection.
Louis,
I share with your "wish". We can always try and do our best, especially as researchers to have a global, influential "voice" to unite the peoples of the world about this concern. As researchers we must be able to identify a working strategy on the basis of "data"..
Dear Thomas,
We need good shepherds according to God heart. In the Catholic Church there are many of them. Have a nice day!
Dr. Hameed wrote to me of his conviction, that the earth and mankind will be destroyed, as this he thinks is the LAW OF NATURE.
Dear RG-colleague, the Dinosaurus changed to the lizard and the bird; a small mamal changed to the primitive monkey and this one to the modern mankind. For sure this way of changing will go on and not stop, as the CHANGE is the LAW of NATURE and not the destruction. But of course Change of climate can mean, that certain species cannot survive and give space to others who come into being.
And also - as we cannot foresee the future - we must accept the idea, that either mankind will develop in a positive way or there is the possibility that it will make space to another intelligent being. - we may be cannot even imagine by now how it will look like - could be the holistic organism ot he plancton in the sea...
I suppose those who can cross Earthly Life, they may (or will) find definitely some answers for the above-said question raised by Mr. Heise. A simple hint: When an engineer design a machine, definitely suggest some instruction manual for better operation of the machine. To operate the machine properly, one should follow that very manual, which fetches two benefits: At first most, the machine works properly to the aim of its designer. Secondly, when everything goes well with the machine, there will be no disturbances and no pollution environmentally. Now, If we consider mankind who is mastering the planet, by virtue of science and technology, the same idea may apply, i.e., analogous to machine. That is to say, mankind also needs some instruction manual written by her/his designer in order to "operate" properly for translation of our planet to a safer place. Home-made instruction for mankind won't help as it is experienced in the written history.
Summary of my previous comment: We need a "Heavenly Morals" to save our planet. VIVA!
Creativity, both individual and social, is the key to solving the problems posed to human kind piece. The new paths of evolution must be the result of solidarity and interconnectedness. The media, supported and promoted by new technologies unstoppably increase the possibility of human interaction through networking (connected minds) that will be more positive if it relies on a system of values from which the basic institutions of society participatory promote acceptance and criticism of the media and information. Creativity needed to find solutions becomes more effective the more supportive, connected, global either. In classrooms should promote the use of new technologies, key social future in order to prepare future generations in the critical use of media as a tool and way of human interaction, information search and research tool and Learning. The lot of ideas, contacts, knowledge, information and procedures provided by the network will be the baseline for applied research in data analysis, in search of new information and therefore the final result, creative in its search procedure and its results.
Creativity is a cognitive faculty of every human being. Creativity is not the heritage of the "artists" but imbues all people and all the cognitive elements of individuals.
There is a widespread awareness among parents and educators that new computer and cyber media do not facilitate creativity, even that prevent or deteriorate. Are now less creative children watch more television because ?. Are we less creative adults because we read less ?.
Moreover, while the use of other devices depends on family economies, everything about the digital world is considered necessities. There networked computers everywhere and while the purchasing power prevents some countries the family and personal access to the computer, the fact remains that the ability of traders and needs of deprived sectors have proliferated in countries less fortunate meeting places where the computer Internet is available to everyone, with most updated technologies and better quality than those individually can have massively in developed countries
Another fear is that the Internet has become an absorbing phenomenon that transforms its users into isolated beings from family and friends, who prefer virtual reality to the street, reducing participation in society more than television did before. The family does not consider the computer, or access to networks as an instrument of work or relationships, but only as recreation and fun.
The citizens of industrialized countries lives from birth to new technologies. In third world countries, still dominated by the information society, its citizens are far from controlling access to the digital world.
The technological possibilities infinitely increase the storage spaces of individual and collective memory of mankind, facilitate the organization of ideas and memory, make breakneck search of information, related data and documents in times getting shorter and operate information on vertiginous million times.
Human possibility of knowing not exhausted in conceptualizing but beyond: human species is capable of joining together concepts into generalizations of cause and effect, ie it is capable of encoding (combines concepts and generalizations) which relate with other codes and other generalizations, to have code systems. Each subject, discipline, theory or topic has a certain structure itself and formed by code systems.
As a code builds on another code, learning increasingly "broad" acquires knowledge of a subject. This is continually seen an increasing number of related concepts and generalizations. The more generic or widespread is a coding system, the more useful it will be for the learner. To the extent that brain connections become more numerous the scope of the information, which are more integrated with each other in the brain totaling information and giving possibility to integrate a vast majority of expanding knowledge. This neuronal activity facilitates learning other knowledge .. The contribution of new technologies, digital media or Internet, supports human ability to encode and make connections between the same neurons in the human brain, among people and between people and computers through network.
The integral relationship in the human brain, their discoveries or inventions, it is very important to explain the relations between the brain and other memories, whether of others or of the vast amount of information that accumulates in digital stores. The immeasurable amount of data we have, after a hard work of reflection, search, analysis and research occurs at rest almost always, the intuitive leap, the creative act that usually comes on suddenly as a result of the process of thought. To end the tour, review what was found, what invented, of the decision, which is reinforced at the moment who learns valuable considers its findings and valid hypotheses is necessary.
The speed of the machines, the ability to store information in the digital age, the speed and effectiveness in the search, cause faster intuitive leaps, since creativity is given not so much the quality but the quantity of ideas, and is the human brain which selected, filtered, the re-encoded, the uses and relates with others to create the idea of quality that meets the anticipated needs.
This experience becomes richer when it becomes full, integrating the experiences of others, either orally, in writing, personally or through networks.
The digital memory, to call in some way which we seeks computerization of knowledge provides greater creative possibilities, as there are more means to establish synapses, connections not only between neurons of the same individual, but with incalculable information each individual can store in its own memory, in memory of your computer or you can search for the network. If the memory of our brain, we release through computer systems, ie, trust the computer storing the incalculable memory, speed of access to information, the speed with which makes connections, makes operations and transmits the results we can increase our personal skills turning the computer into an instrument more of our brain and thereby increasing our creative possibilities.
Internet gets to mankind greater mental independence, becoming an extension of their physical capabilities and project beyond the mind routines and mental habits that have developed learning to read and write and delegating plots work to machines.
The solution of the great problems of the world needs the intention of dominating the resources but large doses of creativity -Breaking viciosos- endless circles to balance economic and social turmoil not only suppress the large pockets of poverty, distribute jointly resources, defend the planet from environmental damage, fight to expand the space for human rights, win the battle against many diseases and get the solution of many other problems that challenge the stability of relations and tripping over themselves to the human species to a hopeless and full of negative omens future. In a family or educational system it is necessary to break vicious circles improving the links between teachers and students, eliminating stereotypes localist societies, avoiding xenophobic attitudes and relationships, optimizing in order the connections between people both near and far, acquiring global awareness of that taking vital decisions and creative can be closer thanks to the multiple connections between members of the planet.
The technology called causes in the human individual's entry into a different world, full of alternatives, endless, exciting and unpredictable. The uncertainty generated by new technologies, which for many is a cause of anxiety, can become the engine of learning, finding new solutions, and therefore in the main motivating force of learning.
Between the individual and the environment, competition or emotional understanding is generated, in a reciprocal action that leads to the identification with the environment, with the values it represents. the deep human need to respond to others and to work together with them towards a goal is so sated.
A new dimension in the overall experience requires new ways in achieving cognitive skills of citizens, experimentation and analysis, in the invention of endless creative synthesis that allow changes and innovations in the relationship between people, objects and the world.
It is necessary to integrate knowledge, transfer of information, work in multidisciplinary teams and connect with thinkers and researchers from around the world to explore the great sea of communication.
The lot of ideas, contacts, knowledge, information and procedures provided by the network will be the baseline for applied research in data analysis, in search of new information and therefore the final result, creative in its search procedure and its results.
Information sites are being They're still on the books but many of them can now access the Internet, in newspapers, which are accessible via the Internet, photos and graphic documents, in contact with others. Information is everywhere, in cinema, travel, documents, in oral conversation. All this facilitates network quickly and efficiently.
.
The fluidity of association is referring to relations between ideas, things or objects, which in turn give rise to analogical thinking, structured traversal way knowledge workers. The brain-wolkers are able to express with simplicity complex systems, in order to associate them with known systems, transferring experiences from other fields of science or experience, becoming simple what is complicated, establishing fluid relationships between complex projects and programs, maintaining the innovative flexibility to anticipate and solve problems.
We invent everyday, to invent and discover what is hidden, although it is already invented by others for many years. The process of discovering something new is for the student learning indispensable condition for achieving their research capabilities.
The future must practice day after day, for the past, in which we rely, we are gone. The responsibility for maintaining the evolutionary dynamics of the human species is in our hands. You need to look to the future anticipating situations, advancing our preparation to events.
In the final phase of verification and production of creative processes, the world of new technology also facilitates skills and resources, drawing, text, proportions, and formulations to people who were previously denied by their deficiencies or lack of experience.
The media and easy access to information can desensitize users and viewers about serious problems of humanity, since everything is live, both the real and fiction. If there is no analysis, it is easy for a shell on the problems and thus about values is created. However, awareness is the first link of learning, the place where cognitive theory places the first coding, in which the receiving person chooses or rejects consciously or unconsciously what your brain will perceive. Without the mechanism of awareness it is impossible to access the information acceptance process, and therefore reach higher levels of the learning process. We can be sensitive to certain stimuli and not others. It is a problem of intentionality that can be studied in order to promote the activities through which students can learn to appreciate situations for which they were perceptive little or nothing before.
However, so we must strengthen and adjust our value system, since insecurity meat with our own responsibility as educators is done.
To educate participation is necessary to promote changes in the content and methods. First, participation and innovation must be brought to the classroom. To the extent that those who are educated to take part in deciding goals and methods to achieve them, the critical sense will be encouraged and the student will acquire a technological education that will enable you as a coach and as a citizen.
Innovation is changing education based solely on the contents also covers other human relationships, attitudes and participation.
It requires the joint participation interactivity. Today, new technology provides the mechanisms and conditions necessary to exercise it and achieve it. There are no excuses. The most powerful engine for creativity is the interaction between people. Technological innovations allow full connection between people, students, technicians, researchers and professionals and assess what relationships should be made face to face and what can be achieved by email, chat, video conference or by using other collaborative tools. The tools, however, do not replace human interaction, which must be present, whenever possible, in all technological fact.
All these circumstances call for a constant change in the professional profile of the teacher to give satisfactory quantitative training requirements of the current national response.
To start learning creativity the teacher should be creative, that the statement of this article means effort and planning, be sensitive to the problems of students and society, aware of their environment, open to all kinds of techniques and means assist the learning process and the clarification of the message.
Study techniques, which give so much importance in recent years, are all creativity techniques, as proposed different alternatives with different results for each individual, and this for each subject or discipline. The media, in many cases are interactive without denying any of the proponents of new technologies
We MUST learn to love again, and AGAIN.
But we must also protect ourselves from those whose do not accept this passion.
We do need an excellent education at all levels. Beside, as dear @Bryan has stated, "we MUST learn to love again, and AGAIN".
What on Earth We Can Do to Save the Planet ?
"With scientists and environmental groups wondering out loud whether the human race will survive to the end of this century, it is a good moment for people in education to consider whether they are teaching the right subjects, or teaching them properly. After all, the people about to pass through universities are those who will decide whether Homo sapiens makes it beyond 2100. If the next generation of students do not get the message about the way the planet is heading, and act on the information, the future does indeed look bleak.
It is not that the environment is ignored in education; nearly every institution now has courses that mentions the word in its title. But mostly it is a fashionable add-on to something regarded as more mainstream. And even the best courses do not take in the single big question - will the world as we are shaping it survive? Perhaps every academic should take a moment to ask themselves another question. Will their subject, as currently taught, make a difference in saving the human race?..."

Teach the child as well as the adult with the examples of how pollution is affecting our lives. How selfishness is harming us. With good examples that are appropriate- not vague theoreretical answers.
