As a early-career PhD student, this is an issue I am currently thinking about as I am preparing (my first ever) two manuscripts. What criteria do you use when determining co-authorship, and author order? While I am sure much of this leans on the preferences of the PI, I am interested to hear opinions which are independent from my working group.

What necessitates co-authorship? Should a colleague who helped with stats, GIS, bioinformatics, scripting/ programming be included? What about helping with conceptualization, acquiring grant funding, lab/field training or aid, etc?Or should it be "pick two-three of the above"? When should PIs be included- only when work was directly funded or aided by them, performed in their laboratory, or should they be included on independent work as well (for example, non-relating simulation studies)? What about undergraduate students?
