I agree that ice melting in Antarctica (end the process goes faster in Greenland) is one of the main threats from global warming. The potential threat is rising of sea level by 65-70 meters (if all ice melts). Other threat is an influence on agro-crops from rising temperature (negative in fertile regions), but positive in Siberia and Canada. The rising volatility of temperatures and weather is the 3rd threat, quite visible. But I did not see physical proofs why this should be necessarily linked with rise of average temperature by just 1 degree (what we have already).

Regarding the raise of earth's temperature issue; Climate change has happened many times over the history of the Earth, including the coming and going of ice ages. For more recent centuries, we have more details.

Since the 1800s, people have recorded the daily temperature. By about 1850, there were enough places measuring temperature so that scientists could know the global average temperature. From 1920 to 1940, the temperature got warmer. From 1940 to 1970, the temperature got slightly cooler. From 1970 to today, the average temperature for the world has increased by about 0.6 ± 0.2 °C (1.1 ± 0.4 °F).[7] Starting in 1979, satellites started measuring the temperature of the Earth.

Before 1850, there were not enough temperature measurements for us to know how warm or cold it was. Climatologists use proxy measurements to try to figure out past temperatures before there were thermometers. This means measuring things that change when it gets colder or warmer. One way is to cut into a tree and measure how far apart the growth rings are. Trees that live a long time can give us an idea of how temperature and rain changed while it was alive.

For most of the past 2000 years the temperature didn't change much. There were some times where the temperatures were a little warmer or cooler. One of the most famous warm times was the Medieval Warm Period and one of the most famous cool times was the Little Ice Age. Other proxy measurements like the temperature measured in deep holes mostly agree with the tree rings. Tree rings and bore holes can only help scientists work out the temperature until about 1000 years ago. Ice cores are also used to find out the temperature back to about half a million years ago.

We can control it by following Cleaner Production , reducing GHG emission and conserving water, nature by planting more and more trees to provide a green cover and thus controlling the global warming.

The most concerning consequence would be the increase in microbial (pathogens) diversity and evolution. We might see newer diseases like Ebola and more.

Dear Madhav Nepal appreciates your addition to the discussion. Indeed, the rise in the earth's temperature could provide a benifical environment for pathogen growth, which could lead towards the diseases.

If all the Antarctic ice melts then there will be sea level rise of about 65 m. That means that Holland, Florida, and Bangladesh will all disappear from the face of the Earth. Intrusion of salt water into coastal regions is a minor factor since the coastal regions will no longer exist.

Very interesting discussion towards the elements responsible behind the global warming. I agree with the points mentioned by Alastairbain mcdonald. However the rate of melting should be further considered. Cultivation of useful trees can also play a vital role to minimize global warming particular in dry regions.

As rightly pointed by you, Muhammad Saad Khan, the melting of ice is mainly due to global warming. The release of hydrocarbons and other harmful gases are leading to depletion of ozone layer that is also yielding to global warming. This can be reduced by taking positive measure to reduce pollutants or gases going into atmosphere and reduce ice melting.

Guys, aren´t we exagerating a little bit about doom scenarios? In my understanding, a five degree °C increase in the southern region would spark a melting process that would lead to a considerable glacier-free South Pole in the very long term; about five thousand years. The planet is stil recovering from the last maximal glaciation, so temperatures going up is pretty normal, and not damaging (why should it be?).

However, it is not clear if gobal temperatures are experiencing a net, real increase. That is why all IPCC models have been bady criticized. Not a dennier of Climate Change, but I just don´t see how humans can be altering the natural variability system, as we do not know how to model and predict cimate behaviour (as aknowledged by the same IPCC.

Between 22,000 BP and 10,000BP atmospheric CO2 rose from 180 ppm to 260 ppm a net increase of 80 ppm and the Laurentian (covering North America) and Scandinavian ice sheets melted away. Sea level rose by 120 m (~400 feet).

Since 1750 CE, we have raised CO2 from 280 ppm to 410 ppm, a net increase of 130 ppm, nearly twice that which occurred during the end of the last ice age. It is now happening over a period of 250 years compared with 10,000 years.

What we are doing is far more than Nature could achieve, and the consequence will be more severe too!

As global warming is directly proportional to the ozone, we humans cant live without the burning of fossil fuels as we are so addicted to the new world that is based mainly on technology and electricity. So this all effects the climate and causes global warming which moves toward the Anatrctic. The solution unfortunatly is involved with everyones contribution so therefore the problem will continue.
