I want to use L-Cysteine HCl as a reducing agent for anaerobic gut microbiome cultures and have no idea what concentration to use. I would appreciate some guidance.
Hello, most often, cysteine (more precisely L-Cysteine hydrochloride) is added between 0.4 (doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2672.1989.tb05110.x.) and 0.8 g.L-1 (doi: 10.1007/s002489900072; doi:10.1111/j.1365-2672.2005.02605.x) to culture media dedicated to gut microbiota. Recently, the value of a much lower addition (0.025 g.L-1) has been discussed (cf doi: 10.1017/S1751731117002749)
Hi! I use a concentration of 0.5g/L and that works well for me when culturing anaerobes isolated from stool in an anaerobic chamber. This is a common concentration found throughout literature on culturing a variety of anaerobes as well.
