What causes bacteria to have sharp/fuzzy zone of inhibitions on disc susceptibility plates?

Zone of inhibitions sometimes appear fuzzy/sharp with different antibiotic discs on the same agar plate, what are the explanations for this?

Also, how important are these when determining the best antibiotic for treatment?
