Newcastle and Wollongong are good examples but I am interested to learn about other large regional centres, particularly those that may have experienced a shift in their economy and have had to 'reinvent' themselves. What could Geelong learn from other regional cities?
You have to map the social structure of Geelong to ask such a general question.
You may have mentioned the best two Australian comparison points...although Adelaide would be interesting in its transition away from heavy industry. The New Zealand city of Tauranga would be an interesting comparison too - both large ports in areas of high landscape amenity with larger cities nearby (Melbourne/Auckland).
