Society + Linguistics = Sociolinguistics focuses on all the areas/factors of a society that has impact on language development including language changes because of different social classes, professions, religious and political groups, socio-cultural meanings, everyday social interpretation, speech communities, dialects, varieties, styles and so on. In short, Sociolinguistics discusses dialects, registers, idiolects, diglossia, pidgins, creoles etc.

There has been an emerging topic in vocational education and training. In some national contexts, English has been a prominent evaluation criterion. Thus, companies require their job candidates to submit English test scores such as the TOEIC (Test of English in International Communication) scores. From that standpoint, linguistic ideology, namely English's hegemonic position is a form of power that rules non-native English speakers and their society. Thus, ESL as vocational behavior can be an emerging topic in sociolinguistics.

As Sociolinguistics focuses on the relationship between language and society, this relationship being multilayered has led to the emergence of all those subfields which connect language with the sociocultural fabric of any society. Whether one looks at cross-cultural linguistics, language and gender, dialectology, contact linguistics, multilingualism or language endangerment, all these areas fall under the domain of Sociolinguistics.
Sociolinguists are interested in how we speak differently in varying social contexts, and how we may also use specific functions of language to convey social meaning or aspects of our identity. Sociolinguistics teaches us about real-life attitudes and social situations.
If on the one hand we have Language Policy- the balk of ideas involving laws, rules, regulations and practices, (to mention but these few), intended to achieve planned Language change in society, we find on the other hand, many marginalised Languages in Africa. Some are even at the risk of dying. The case of Khoisans in the south of Angola is just one of many examples. These two arenas dwell in Sociolinguistics
