Dear users of nanoindenters,
I was wondering what procedures do you usually use to clean your diamond nanoindentation tips? I know that there is nothing specifically described but some internal procedures... For majority of applications i have faced before pushing the tip into adhesive tape was more than enough, now I have some sticky organic debris which is not removed by this. So, i am looking for other safe for tip methods and will be very grateful if you share yours.

you can use a transparent piece of plastic and perform the nano-indentation test on this material. Do it in 3-4 different parts of the sheet and then mark these parts and look under the optical microscope to see whether you can see contamination in each cavity or not. if it works for you, you should see less dirt in 3rd and 4th hole that means your nano-indentation tip has been cleaned.

in my case a series of indents (5-10) into a fused silica sample (which you also use for calibration of your tip shape function) and applying an indentation force close to the maximum range helped. Of course it depends on the dirt particles you have on your tip - but in my case it worked almost every time.

Best way to clean the tips is used water with few drops of bath soap and soft tooth brush and dry it in ethanol alcohol.
Also tip can be cleaned using ultrasonic jewellery water -bath. try these two.
