First part of your question - My experience

I have not faced, until now, any situation where there was an unending wait.

My suggestions.

1. Perseverance & patience are the two important dimension of success.

2. There should always be a timeline, or deadline; if the research proposal is not going through within this period, we need to move on. New proposal, new attempt.

But, always we have to keep it in mind that "Life is much bigger than this". I mean any failure in our attempts (in research) should not affect our way of (happy) life.

Interesting question

In my latest publication, I had to use data of 1274 participants. The process took two weeks from getting the approval of the Ethics Committee to the signing of the Declaration of Helsinki with regard to the collected data and attaching in submitting the paper.

It is a slow, inconsistently applied process.

Frustrating because lawyers in Universities run ethics... My experience is ethics NEVER passes anything the first round. But, normally does in the second round. That's what happens when the legal profession gets involved in research!

Historically, universities got sued for doing experiments on people that caused harm. That is where ethics developed from - the institution is making sure they cannot get sued.

However, on the positive side, it does make researchers refine their ideas, develop strong research frameworks for testing and look after participants ethically when human participants are involved. It is important to respect participants and ensure they are not in any danger on any level.

Of course such actions are unethical in a way disrespectful to the one who originally conceived it. If someone is in this situation call the attention of the culprit and ask action to the research committee showing your narratives about your original work. I had experience of such which to my mind I just broaden my understanding of human frailty and greed. They did it for economic and prestige(promotion) sacrificing ethics. Anyway we, need to be vigilant and make a strong demand to value research ethics. Never give up continue do your piece be it accepted or not. Thank you.

I never had too much of a problem with ethics, but have not had to encounter them too many times. But there was one time when I was doing a follow-up to my original study (and I think it was the second follow-up) and was going to interview as many of the original participants who I could. They were already known to me, and by then, after I had studied them in such depth from the transcripts and field notes that I had taken, I felt that I knew them very well!

However, the ethics committee responded that they had concerns about me visiting these people on my own! If they had looked into my studies (I think it was the third of the 'series') and also had been more aware of my professional role; I was a nurse practitioner and some of my work was visiting new referrals in their own homes who were completely unknown to me initially, they might not have seen this as such a drawback.

Scientific honesty: is the researcher's use of the efforts of others, quoting them, and integrating them in his research with reference to their original reference, so that they are references that the researcher used properly without attributing them to himself. One of the most prominent aspects of the researcher's preservation of scientific integrity

First: Preserving the ownership of others as an aspect of scientific integrity

Second: Exercise caution and caution in mentioning the statements of others and their purpose, taking into account the scientific integrity

To raise the level of scientific integrity among researchers, we suggest the following:

Providing a committee specialized in research ethical issues and scientific trust in the research bodies, in order to monitor scientific research and impose penalties on research that violates scientific honesty.

Clarify the nature of scientific honesty and ethical principles at various levels of education.

The presence of consciousness and conscience for every researcher keeps him away from breaching scientific honesty.

The researcher uses the research tools and methods that ensure scientific integrity during research preparation.

Dealing honestly and truthfully with other texts and the efforts of others.

The researcher has scientific honesty, morals and good qualities.

Not faced the situation so far. Patience is one of the most important pillar of success in career. There is a framework of time for research proposals, if not responding, it's depends on you to submit new proposal.

This is an administrative task that the Institution needs to implement. Each institution (University) need to have a Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review the researcher submission. The Board serves as a "check" prior to data collection.

The researcher will need to go through their department to speak with the correct persons to get an IRB set-up in place prior to any study data collection, which sets a precedence for future submission.

Work sincerely with hope, one day the better results will come.
