I believe there is a dermatological condition that many refer to as Morgellons that has a yet unknown organic etiology and is a completely separate diagnosis from Delusions of Parasitosis. How can you photograph a figment of a delusion?
My best guess is that it is a polybacterial infection, akin to piscine mycobacteriosis that was introduced to the United States with Zebra mussels or other invasive aquatic mollusks known to harbor microbial biofilms including spirochetes and fungus.
Sir Thomas Browne first described it in Languedoc, a port area of France around the same time that ships would potentially be bringing back invasive molluscs from the Caspian, Black and Sea of Azov which is where Zebra Mussels are native to.
