Dears,
I am thinking to do the PhD but still confused in choosing a good topic. What are today's most attractive topics in Finance or Financial economics ? What else other than Fintech? Does Fintech require someone who has an IT qualification and skills?
P.S. ( I am trying to get a scholarship as I can't finance my self. What are the topics that can attract the universities and the research centers?)
What do you recommend?
Many Thanks
Thank you Mostafa Raeisi Sarkandiz
for your reply and suggestions. I agree that Behavioral economics is taking the focus nowadays, I did a proposal before about the relationship between behavioral economics and bubbles but I stuck on how to make a model for something related to human behavior and psychology. Although many doctors liked the topic but I didn't find a lot of supervisors. What are the aspects of Behavioral Economics you're going to focus on.The Most attractive topics based on my dual experience in the banking and academic fields I recommend you to look at one of the following topics:
1) The determinants of Credit risk in Banks
2) The impact of the Macroeconomic variables on the Non-performing loans
3)The Optimal capital ratio to the commercial banks' survival
Thank you Karim Farag for your comment. I also have experience in banks and I think this will really help. I'll read more about the topics you mentioned and hopefully they'll help.
I think financial psychology is more attractive, because there is impact digital era to financial decision making.
Some of the topics already suggested to you are interesting.
However, Financial Technology in the contemporary economic environment (which is blends digital computing technology with financial services) is apparently the in-thing. Second, topics in corporate finance - profitability assessment; earnings management and valuation of corporate capital funds and assets or prediction of solvency, distress or growth and failure can never exhausted or expire. I wish to state that research on financial crises is basically speculative - most times it does not come to pass or fit into present conditions.
The studies that can fetch Ph.D scholarship focus more of financial econometrics; Financial Mathematics and possibly financing of social development programmes
As someone who is just about to defend her thesis on Sustainable Finance, I would suggest you look into that topic to see if you find it appealing. I think that it is the future, since if we don't find a way of doing Finance taking into account enviromental and social issues...one day there might be no future anymore. It is also a very wide area, so you probably can find something that is interesting to you.
Related to that, I would also suggest you explore the possibility on working in Circular Economy.
Finally, I don't think anybody in this thread has told you, but if you start doing your PhD, make sure you don't work on a topic because it is attractive and trendy, and ensure that what you are going to work on is really interesting AND important to you, since you are going to spend a lot of time working on it!
Best luck!
I agree with maite.
To understand current research gaps, read working papers by top authors. In addition, read recent papers (2016 or newer) in top journals i.g for banking (journal of financial intermediation, journal of banking and Finance).
doing this will help you find a feasible gap to fill in the literature. which should be your focus when choosing a topic, rather than picking a topic that might seem appealing.
Supervisours like to see innovative ideas but they prefer ideas that can be executable.
good luck
Thank you Chris enyioma Alozie for your recommendations. I totally agree that financial crisis doesn't work for present conditions. I think yes, topics in corporate finance and banking are most practical.
Thank you Maite Cubas-Díaz I will have look on sustainable finance and thanks for the advice. sure I will choose a topic that I am interested in.
Thank you Ibs Sal I really like investment portfolio. will read more about that topic.
Thank you Sad Abu Alim . I really appreciate your advice and the name of journals you specify.
Thank you Bhaskkar Sinha
. Yes since I have banking experience I think this field is the best for PhD for me. I need just to read more and find the gaps.Dear Narjis Alhaddad,
I propose interesting issues related to the development of Big Data technology applications and Data Science and Data Analytics analytics in economics, finance and management of organizations, including enterprises, financial and public institutions. In my opinion, scientific research confirms the strong correlation between the development of Big Data technology, Data Science analytics, Data Analytics and the effectiveness of the use of knowledge resources. I believe that the development of Big Data technology and Data Science analytics, Data Analytics and other ICT information technologies, multi-criteria technology, advanced processing of large information sets, and Industry 4.0 technology increases the efficiency of using knowledge resources, including in the field of economics, finance and organization management. In recent years, ICT information technologies, Industry 4.0 etc. have been particularly dynamically developing and are used in knowledge-based economies. These technologies are used in scientific research and business applications in commercial enterprises and in financial and public institutions. Due to the growing importance of this issue in knowledge-based economies, an important issue is the analysis of the correlation between the development of Big Data technology and Data Science, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence and the effectiveness of using knowledge resources to solve key problems of civilization development, e.g. in the implementation programs for the quick implementation of the principles of sustainable pro-ecological development in economic processes in accordance with the green economy philosophy and financing programs for the creation and implementation of ecological innovations, and the urgent implementation of necessary ecological reforms. The goal of these pro-ecological business venture programs is to reduce the level of environmental pollution and slow down the global warming process. However, this is only one of the key global problems, the solution of which may be conditioned by the question of the possibility of increasing the efficiency of using large resources of knowledge accumulated in Big Data databases in knowledge-based economies. In connection with the above, I suggest the following research questions that may inspire you to implement important and interesting research projects: Are there studies that verify the correlation between the development of Big Data technology and Data Science analytics, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence and other ICT information technologies and advanced data processing Industry 4.0 and the effectiveness of the use of knowledge resources, including in the field of economics, finance and management of organizations, including enterprises, financial and public institutions? In recent years, there are more and more media reports that in many countries there has been a significant increase in environmental pollution and a global acceleration of the global warming process. The problem is serious because the pace of the global warming process has significantly accelerated in recent years. However, this is only one of many key problems in the development of human civilization to be urgently solved in the 21st century. It is therefore necessary to increase the efficiency of processing knowledge resources in order to find faster solutions to key problems of civilization development. The use of Big Data, Data Science, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence and other ICT information technologies as well as advanced data processing Industry 4.0 in the processing of knowledge resources should contribute to increasing the efficiency of knowledge resource processing in knowledge-based economies, including in the field of economics and finance.
Best wishes

Thank you Dariusz Prokopowicz . I appreciate your detailed answer and all the valuable information you provided and the research question you wrote. It really seems interesting and promising. If i'm not mistaken, the topic is related to Fintech I guess. I will search about it and I hope it will help me.
Problem finding/topic selection is a major and key part of PhD. You have to dig deeper into the field of your interest during your course work and think about what problem the society is facing that you can show the path to solve. Remember, you don't need to solve the problem completely (in fact one can't in PhD itself) but your PhD work should lead to multiple projects to solve the problem you found. In other words, your problem should not be a single and independent study but it should be a small area of research for the future.
Hope this helps you!

What about developing a model for predict the non-traditional financing services acquisition from the people and replacing the traditional banks with a peer to peer blockchain based for value exchange (not bitcoin necessarily)? I mean, we as society tend to have a worldwide fully connected network which we could ask a credit or loan (instead of asking a bank) and get the answer with rates, payment schedule, etc, everything automated? Will people accept it? How long the acquisition time will take? Will authorities allow that? What would banks do on that model?
The impact of psychological situation on stock markets in stock exchanges
Thank you Javier Robles it's a good idea. will try to read more about the blockchain.
Thank you Abdulnabi Abdulameer Matrood it is a very good and important topic but I am more in Financial economics and Finance.
Thank you Taher Alkhalaf . You mean to focus on behavioral finance or behavioral economics and study that field on the stock market. I like how the human psychology affects on the Financial market and on the economy.
Dear Nilambari Moholkar , Your topic is really interesting, specially that I like derivatives and their analysis. I really liked your idea and will go through this topic for sure. Thanks a lot
Please do not look for an ‘attractive’ topic. Study reality. Ask questions. Then pursue a question you‘re most passionate about. Your PhD can only provide you tools for your future career. It will not be the sole platform of your career. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the challenges. Finally, it will help if you distinguished case study from the hypothetico-deductive approach early. I see many PhDs struggling because they do not understand case study. It is a powerful methodology and epistemology. Yet, it is ubiquitous and hence widely abused. Dear Colleagues and Friends from RG,
The above question inspired me to propose reflections and inspire discussions on the following issues:
Proposals for research topics in the field of finance and economics.
In recent years, the development of knowledge about finance and economics has been determined by many factors, which include, among others, issues of technological progress and changes in economic processes taking place in the microeconomic and macroeconomic areas. In the light of the above, I propose the following interesting research topics currently being developed in many different research centers in the field of finance and economics:
1. The development of various concepts of activating economic processes through the involvement and use of instruments of state interventionism, including selected, specific instruments used in selected configurations of budgetary, fiscal and monetary policy instruments. The growing importance of pro-development socio-economic policies that stimulate economic growth, including housing, social and social policies, etc. as well as specific formulas and instruments for financing these programs from public funds. Development of social and housing policy, etc. as key components of pro-development socio-economic policy in order to activate economic processes and counteract unfavorable faster and faster demographic processes of population aging. Analysis of the economic efficiency of investment projects carried out under specific socio-economic policies, including primarily the assessment of the economic effectiveness of financial expenditure from the state budget to finance specific development goals, activating economic growth of socio-economic policies, including housing, social and social policies, etc.
2. Analysis of the effectiveness of the use of state finances, the finances of public sectors of the state in the implementation of specific goals of interventionist, pro-development, anti-crisis, Keynesian socio-economic policy. The main objectives of the above socio-economic policy may include activating the growth of citizens' consumption and production, investment, entrepreneurship, innovation of enterprises in order to improve economic growth and protect the national economy against the global recession, which may deepen in connection with the trade wars conducted by the world's largest economies and an increase in the costs of transformation of the energy sectors consisting in the development of renewable energy sources and improvement of environmental protection techniques, including ultimately counteracting the negative effects of climate change, the globar warming process, which is moving faster and faster. Analysis of the economic efficiency of large investment projects carried out by the state, implemented as part of pro-development socio-economic policy in cyclical and strategic sectors, e.g. in the field of development of pro-ecological energy policy, housing policy, activation policy of entrepreneurship, innovation and entrepreneurship, etc.
3. Analysis of the growing importance of behavioral finances in the context of examining changes in consumer behavior regarding purchases of consumer goods and changes in the behavior of investors operating on financial markets investing in specific financial instruments, including capital market assets, and securities. Analysis of changes in the relationship of consumer behavior on the markets of goods and services caused by the impact of advertising campaigns conducted on the Internet, using new tools of Internet marketing used in new online media, including primarily on social media portals. The growing importance of economics and behavioral finance, including the analysis of the determinants of media shaping consumer opinions regarding company brand recognition, product and service offerings, etc. by increasing the importance of online information services, including social media portals. The growing importance of financial market psychology, the growing significance of behavioral factors influencing investment decisions of individual investors operating on capital markets and consumers making purchasing decisions on markets of popular products and services. On the other hand, I propose examining the changes in the significance of determinants shaping changes in the ratio of individual investors' share to institutional investors, i.e. mainly banks and investment funds investing their financial surpluses in securities listed on stock exchanges. Analysis of the increase in significance and impact of the involvement of ICT, Internet and Industry 4.0 information technologies to improve computerized transaction systems and the development of internet platforms enabling the conclusion of financial transactions via the Internet from mobile devices, including smartphones. Analysis of the increase in significance and impact of the involvement of ICT, Internet and Industry 4.0 information technologies in the context of studying the behavioral changes of individual investors operating on capital markets.
4. Determinants of the systemic credit risk growing since the 1970s in commercial and public financial systems of many countries, increase in the scale and frequency of emerging national and global financial and economic crises, increase in public finance indebtedness in many countries, decrease in productivity in the economies of many countries with simultaneous speculative increase in valuations of securities of companies listed on stock exchanges. The growing importance and improvement of management processes of credit risk management processes and other categories of financial, market, operational and economic risk. Analysis of the possibilities of improving financial risk management processes in connection with the use of ICT, Internet and advanced data processing industry 4.0 for analytical processes and changes in the importance of key financial and economic determinants analyzed in the microeconomic and macroeconomic areas.
5. Increased diversity in the economic development of developing and highly developed countries, including an increase in the scale of diversification of the examined comparative advantage factors, determinants of specific socio-economic policies, the scale of the impact of globalization processes, international financial institutions and globally operating transnational corporations. The growing importance of foreign capital and technology transfer in financing investment projects in developing countries. Analysis of the impact of international technology transfer and the cross-border flow of financial capital to finance the said technology transfer. Analysis of the importance and economic efficiency of international corporations based in highly developed countries, investment projects for the development of key infrastructure enabling economic development in developing countries.
6. Increasing the significance and scale of implementation of the principles of sustainable, pro-ecological development in economic processes, including the transformation of specific branches of the economy, e.g. energy sector towards green economy, i.e. the conversion of classic energy based on combustion of minerals into environmentally friendly energy based on renewable energy sources . The growing importance of financing eco-friendly projects of business ventures financed from green finance sources. Analysis of the significance and development opportunities, financing pro-ecological reforms in the energy sectors and other branches of the national economy, creation and implementation of ecological innovations into economic processes and other activities carried out as part of the transformation of classical economics into green economy by increasing the importance and participation in economies of development projects carried out according to the concept sustainable proecological economic development. Analysis of the effectiveness of financing pro-ecological reforms in the energy sectors and other branches of the national economy, the creation and implementation of ecological innovations into economic processes and other activities carried out as part of the transformation of classical economy into green economy, taking into account the sources of financing of Greek finance from state public finance funds, from commercial funds operating banks and investment funds, from the funds of citizens developing new pro-ecological economic enterprises in the form of startups financed e.g. from crowdfounding, etc.

Dear Colleagues and Friends from RG, Currently, an interesting proposal for a research topic in this field is the analysis of the potential impact of the development of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic on the global economy and / or the economy of a particular country, including economic efficiency in individual sectors and branches of the economy, on the functioning of specific enterprises. Therefore, determining the changes in credit risk, liquidity and debt in financial institutions and enterprises may also be an important research issue. Potential, necessary restructuring processes that can be undertaken and implemented in various companies in connection with the economic downturn, decline in sales revenues, potential increase in the risk of losing financial liquidity and declaration of bankruptcy can also be examined. I have already started this type of research and invite you to scientific cooperation.
Best wishes.

i think the most important and modern topic represent the relationship between artificial intelligence and financial awareness
I would suggest that you may work on green financing and sustainability. It may hot topic in present research.
Good luck! Regards

ЧТО ПОСЛЕ КАПИТАЛИЗМА: ЭВОЛЮЦИЯ ИЛИ РЕВОЛЮЦИЯ?
Dear Dariusz Prokopowicz , your research topic on the impact of corona virus covid-19 is really interesting and valuable. you mentioned that you need a cooperation, can you please specify what kind of cooperation you'll need If someone want to work with you on this research?
Dear Narjis Alhaddad, In my opinion, an interesting topic of research would be to conduct a comparative analysis of similar, but usually not uniform instruments of anti-pandemic security and interventionist socio-economic policies, including fiscal and monetary ones, in order to diagnose various economic effects taking into account specific differences in the sectoral structure, sectoral economies of individual countries. This type of research can be carried out in parallel in different countries and then the international research team conducting the research could publish a joint scientific work. What do you think about it? Is this a good idea for research?
Regards,
Dariusz Prokopowicz
I am also going to start PhD in finance. This discussion helps me a lot to expand my research scope. I think the following area can be a good prospect for future research and value addition in the finance sector:
1. Finance for sustainable development
2. Financial technology
3. Climate finance/Green finance/Environmental finance
The above topics can applied to any sector or region for greater impact on research outcome.
For those with focus on Africa, finance for sustainable development
with focus on energy
Dear Narjis Alhaddad, I would like to add another interesting research topic: Comparative analysis of the applied anti-crisis, interventionist instruments of economic growth activation in individual countries in order to reduce the scale of the economic downturn caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic. A comparative analysis in international terms, taking into account the lockdowns of the economy, the effects of the applied instruments of socio-economic policy, the so-called Anti-crisis shields, expenditures from the state public finance system, increase in public debt, scale of economic crisis reduction, decrease in unemployment growth, decrease in consumption and investment, etc.
Greetings, All the best, Stay healthy!

Fostering Green Finance for Sustainable Development in emerging markets
suggest research topic related to banking, Loans, Loan recovery management etc
A research topic should be a personal choice so the researchers would be intrinsically motivated to read and research the topic. My PhD was on ethical leadership which I loved reading about as it is key to King IV report on corporate governance and finance. Ethics in Finance are good research topics.
Dear Narjis, I enclose a link to a free collections of corporate governance papers published in our journals since 2012 (more than 1300 papers in more than 50 thematical collections). I hope you will find it interesting to you in your research of CG. https://virtusinterpress.org/A-set-of-updated-thematic-paper-collections-from-Virtus-Interpress.html
Hey guys may I ask something. I am planning to do a Management Masters at Nova SBE in Lisbon, the MiM with Focus on Data Science and Finance. Do I possibly have the opportunity (with good or very good grades) after to do a second masters degree which focuses more on finance and maybe financial economics without having the focus of economics in the bachelors degree?
And to go further to do a PhD in a financial topic which focuses on public topics?
You may focus on Behaviour Finance, particularly sentiment analysis.
Taking into account the current economic, financial and pandemic situation in the economies, I propose the following research topic: Analysis of the effectiveness of the applied anti-crisis state aid coming from the state finance system and provided to commercially operating business entities. The analysis may include a cross-sector and cross-sector comparison of the differences in this efficiency. The analysis may include the relations between the funds spent in the form of subsidies, subsidies to fixed costs, subsidies to employee salaries, subsidies to investment projects, tax reliefs, temporary exemptions from paying contributions to the state for the social security system, etc., in relation to the scale of economic recovery in a given sector and / or the industry sector, the scale of reduction in unemployment growth, the scale of saved jobs, the scale of improvement in the economic and financial situation of enterprises receiving state aid subsidies, the scale of changes in tax revenues to the state budget, etc. The analysis may also include the impact of received subsidies on the improvement of the economic and economic situation. of certain types of business entities and the investment decisions made.
Have a nice day, Stay healthy! Best wishes,
Dariusz Prokopowicz
I think research that will look into non state actors participation in new renewable energyinfrastructure finance and investment in developing economies will be interesting
Green finance or Sustainable financing would be the next big thing to investigate
Choosing Research topic is important step in research but Today there is big confusion to choose and finalize research topic..
Major issues in today's finance is liquidity / cash problem. Individual cash holding level and some companies were unable to pay divided to the shareholders.
You have two questions the first one to choose a research topic, you need to choose a topic with vide scope, which can be merged easily with another topics.
Secondly, you may attach with a university faculty member working on a research projects and win a research project.
You can find some topic that meets your requirement
https://hbswk.hbs.edu/Pages/browse.aspx?HBSTopic=Financial%20Markets
https://hbswk.hbs.edu/Pages/browse.aspx?HBSTopic=Equity
Recommend me any specific research topic related to Islamic finance
Selecting a topic will be contingent upon your area of interest and past professional experience and academic prowess. Any topic just like that may not excite you for pursing it further. It is better choose a area where your passion lies and go through consultants report and research paper associated with your interest. This will help to identify the questions that can be eventually suggest to right topic and along with ideas to write the proposal on it.
For example-
a) Impact on EPS due to technological disruptions
b) Economic impact of changing currency values
c) Will evolving crypto currency and digital currency defunct the need for financial regulatory system? an evidence based analysis.
and so on
Hope it helps
