Assume that you are looking for how frequently family medicine doctors, for example, do publish their papers in open access journals. It would take a lot of time and effort if you needed to download each article or check the website of its journal to see if it is an open journal or not.
And if the number of publications is high, say +1000 papers for example, this would not be a practical option.
The two citation databases, Scopus and Science Citation Index Expanded are marking for each search results the names and numbers of open access journals.
