While analyzing blood smears from T. hermanni, I have found some changes in erythrocyte cytoplasm and I'm not sure what could it be. It doesn't look like any of the hemoparasites from available papers. Its was found only in few individuals from an analyzed population...
I cannot vouch for the identity of such granularity in erythrocytes in turtles to granularity in human erythrocytes.
Many years ago, I worked with blood smears and saw toxic graininess in red blood cells from people who worked in chemical plants. Perhaps some of the animals, which you studied, lived in a toxic environment. As for human erythrocytes, such a phenomenon is a typical morphology in case of poisoning. Basophilic granularity of erythrocytes (Heinz bodies) is an accumulation of blue-violet granules of various sizes around the cell periphery. Granules (granularity) appear only in immature erythrocytes against the background of heavy metal poisoning (lead, mercury, bismuth), certain drugs, alcohol intoxication, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Heinz bodies are round inclusions that can be seen in mature red blood cells. Appear in case of poisoning with hemolytic poisons. For example, phenylhydrazine, aniline and nitrobenzene, which are used in the manufacture of certain dyes and drugs. Also, Heinz bodies can appear in erythrocytes with methemoglobinemia, hereditary non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia, some forms of thalassemia, and radiation sickness.
