Aside from HPLC and GC-MS, what other inexpensive instruments or methods are there that are usually readily available? We are planning on doing an ultrasonic extraction method and then using UVVIS, is that possible? if not how can we extract the PAH and then we also get to measure it without costing us much? Thank you.
It's possible (it depends on your sample matrix), but you have some questions that you must answer;
1. Does your extraction solvent interfere with the wavelength your'e going to use in your procedure?
2. Can you achieve the required ppb concentration for PAH's. I would say no, but prove me wrong!
I would try something more sensitive procedure like flourescense instead of UV/Vis depending on your sample matrix.
Remember, the GC procedure was developed for complex samples like coal.
UV/vis or flourescense can determine the approximate concentration of the UV extracting soltion of PAHs assisted by standard materials, but it can not offer the concentration for each compound and denpends on the matrix of the solution.
If you want to know the exact concentrations, you can use the chromatography technique, such as column chromatography or paper chromatography, to separate the PAHs compositions and then measure the PAHs with UV/vis or flourescense assisted by standard materials.

I agree with Zhiyuan. but would go even further. fluorescence might really do the trick after a simple extraction. By the way there are some official methods for determining coal tar in asphalt. Noone is interested in details, but those materials that contain coal tar needs to be exposed, otherwise the asphalt is reused.
