In reality money works for most people.some people require more freedom and space to flourish in work.Motivation can be strategically enhanced by exploring the personality traits and life goals of the workers. workers need to be studied for their preferences in work style and preferences in ways of receiving rewards and appreciations.

Carrot or stick approach. If a person is not motivated you can counsel them and give them resources that they may lack; if they continue not to be motivated get rid of them (the stick approach). The carrot approach on the other hand is to reward accomplishments via pay raises or promotions. If the person responds positively to such stimuli, the carrot approach is working!

Best way to motivate a demotivated individual is to make him feel that he is not alone in his/her despair, make him a part of a group so that he/she interacts with the group members, feel their struggles/disappointments and their aspirations/outlook of life which may help this individual to set his goals/priorities right both at personal and professional level. Explore why someone is not motivated. If there are family or other issues going on the employer must direct the employee with resources such as counseling, Employee Assistance Program, etc. If the lack of motivation is due to lack of knowledge or skills in a certain area, then the employer must send the employee to take some short-term courses. If it has been determined that the employee does not belong to either category above find out what is wrong - they may just be a misfit. If that is the case give them a warning and get rid of them if they don't improve their performance.
