The Hirsch index is equivalent to the Eddington number, an earlier metric used for evaluating cyclists. The h-index serves as an alternative to more traditional journal impact factor metrics in the evaluation of the impact of the work of a particular researcher. Because only the most highly cited articles contribute to the h-index, its determination is a simpler process. Hirsch has demonstrated that h has high predictive value for whether a scientist has won honors like National Academy membership or the Nobel Prize. The h-index grows as citations accumulate.

There are two possible approaches to evaluate a scientific work: the qualitative one, which presupposes a constructive criticism, and the quantitative one, which deals with measuring its impact through specific indicators. The first approach is focused on peer review system while the second one, is based on a numerical calculation of the scientific impact of a given research. The availability of online databases in the last few decades made possible the birth of bibliometrics, which use mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze the distribution models of publications and the impact of an article or an author in the scientific community.
We continue to assign a big importance to the Impact Factor, but the statement that a high frequency of citations correspond to a high quality of the Journal maybe has little foundation. Furthermore the IF, is not suitable for measuring the quality of a single paper or the impact of a researcher. For this, to measure the impact of an author there is an indicator, the H index, developed in 2005 by the mathematician Jorge Hirsch.
The big problem is, in any case, that to evaluate a research in-depth way we need to have open institutional archives to obtain data.
All of this is now changing, thanks to the evolution of publishing processes and the alternative and comparable parameters, such as Scimago, Eigenfactor, Citation index.
